Amidst all the similarities between Kobe Bryant
and Michael Jordan, the two had very different careers, facing unique challenges head-on. The two may have had similar attitudes and playstyles, but fate dealt them different cards to play.
Doug Collins
, a longtime NBA head coach, offered an interesting analysis on how the two basketball titans fared when they were both 27 years old.

MJ vs. Kobe
Experts claim that basketball athletes enter their prime at 27 years old. It's at that point in their lives that they're at their physical and mental peak. They no longer rely on raw skill and talent, as they have developed mental fortitude over the years. And Collins gave an insightful view of the points in their respective careers.
"I would love to see Michael at 27, Kobe at 27, lock them in a gym and see who comes out. And you know one thing, the other one will be dead on the court,"
Collins said
in 2006, via the Los Angeles Times.

Collins said that Kobe was the best player in the game at that point. Critics did not recognize this because of the off-court issues Bryant had dealt with.
"Kobe at 27 has the worst talent around him he has ever had. When Michael was 27, he had the best talent around him he ever had. It's as if their careers flip-flopped,"
Collins added.
To recall, Jordan
won his first NBA Championship in 1991 when he was 27 years old. He entered the NBA as a high-scoring shooting guard out of North Carolina and was heavily criticized for his ball-hogging tendencies. It took several years for the Black Cat to fully trust his teammates.

When he turned 30 years old, the Chicago Bulls
guard decided to pursue baseball. He came back at 31 years old to win his fourth, fifth and sixth rings before bidding goodbye again at 35 years old.

Kobe's journey
Meanwhile, Kobe won his first chip when he was just 21 years old. Critics say he had the advantage of having a prime Shaquille O'Neal by his side. Still, it's foolish to say Frobe rode the center's back en route to their 2000 NBA Championship. The young Kobe stepped up when the team needed him the most, especially when Shaq fouled out in Game 4.

When Bryant turned 27, he already had three championship rings, but the Lakers
were stuck in the rebuilding stage. In the 2005-06 season, the Lakers
had championship pieces like Lamar Odom
, Andrew Bynum
, and Devean George.
But they also had unproven players like Kwame Brown, Smush Parker, Laron Profit, Von Wafer, and other relatively unknown ballers. It was a tough time to be a Laker fan then. Though Kobe was exploding for 50, 60 and 81 points, the Lakers were struggling as a squad.
It took a few more years before the Lakers finally had a roster built for a title. When Kobe entered his 30s, he guided the Lakers to two more NBA championships, bringing his total to five.

Team success came early to Bryant, which was both a gift and a curse. However, since the Mamba was not an ordinary competitor, he was never satisfied with his early success and remained hungry until his final NBA game.
