- Kool-Aid McKinstry Faces a Monday Night Test Against Surging Drake London
The New Orleans Saints can spend all week drawing up creative coverages for Drake London. Eventually, though, somebody must line up across from Atlanta's 6-foot-4 receiver and win the rep. On Monday night, much of that responsibility should fall to Kool-Aid McKinstry, and the outcome of that matchup could help determine which 1-2 team climbs back to .500.
London arrives in New Orleans after shredding Green Bay for nine catches, 194 yards and a 68-yard reception in Atlanta's 35-14 victory. Through three games, he has 15 receptions for 274 yards, averaging a career-high 18.3 yards per catch. He has not scored a touchdown, but that hardly makes him less dangerous. London is producing explosive plays while Bijan Robinson forces defenses to crowd the line of scrimmage.

That puts McKinstry in the spotlight for a rivalry game carrying early NFC South consequences.
McKinstry is built for this assignment
McKinstry has quietly opened the season with 15 tackles and four passes defensed through three games. He recorded two breakups against Las Vegas after registering one in each of New Orleans' first two contests. The interception column remains empty, but consistently getting a hand on the football is usually a good sign for a cornerback.
This is also no longer a young player merely trying to survive NFL Sundays. The Saints' 2024 second-round selection broke out last season with three interceptions and 17 passes defensed, giving New Orleans a legitimate building block in the secondary.

London presents a different problem than a pure speed receiver. He can win downfield, as Green Bay recently learned, but he can also use his size at the catch point and turn contested throws into completions. Michael Penix Jr. does not have to wait for London to look completely open. Sometimes the matchup itself is the invitation.
My read: McKinstry should play physically without becoming overly aggressive. London is good enough to punish a cornerback who panics and grabs, particularly when the ball is in the air. The Saints need disciplined technique, safety help at selective moments and pressure that keeps Penix from comfortably waiting on deeper routes.
Martin Emerson's progress matters
There is encouraging confirmed news behind McKinstry. Cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. was a full participant Thursday and Friday after missing the Raiders game with a shoulder injury. He sustained that injury against Baltimore in Week 2 and was inactive the following week.

Emerson's potential return would give defensive coordinator Brandon Staley more freedom. At 6-foot-2, Emerson offers another bigger body for matchups involving London. His availability could also allow the Saints to vary assignments instead of asking McKinstry to follow Atlanta's top receiver on every snap.
New Orleans had not yet released its final game-status designations at the time of publication, so Emerson's participation should not be mistaken for confirmation that he will play. Still, consecutive full practices represent a significant step in the right direction.
The rest of the defensive injury picture is less comfortable. Linebackers Kaden Elliss and Pete Werner, along with edge defenders Carl Granderson and Anfernee Jennings, did not practice Thursday or Friday. If several remain unavailable, Atlanta's offense could create a nasty numbers problem: Commit extra resources to Robinson, and London gets favorable coverage. Shade help toward London, and Robinson attacks lighter boxes.
Why this matchup matters
The Saints, Falcons and Carolina Panthers entered the weekend at 1-2. New Orleans can reach .500 and remain at least tied for first place in the division with a victory. Monday will also be the Saints' first divisional game of 2026 and their first Monday night appearance inside the Superdome since 2022.

Those circumstances magnify every contested catch and third-down stop. The Saints do not necessarily have to erase London. Holding him closer to his first two outings, when he totaled six catches for 80 yards — instead of allowing another Green Bay-style explosion would be a meaningful defensive win.
My Two Pennies
McKinstry does not need to chase a highlight-reel interception Monday night. He needs to make London earn everything, tackle immediately and avoid giving Atlanta free yardage through penalties or busted leverage.
This feels like one of those games in which a cornerback can play well for 55 snaps and still be remembered for the one he loses. That is the burden of covering a receiver like London. It is also the opportunity.

If McKinstry handles the stage and Emerson returns to strengthen the rotation, New Orleans can make Atlanta work methodically. If London starts stacking explosive catches, the Falcons' offense becomes much harder to contain — and Monday night could get uncomfortable in a hurry.
