The Seattle Kraken have fallen off as the season has gone along.
That could lead to some selling at the trade deadline, and it could involve a pair of pending free agents.
Jordan Eberle and Jaden Schwartz are both out of contract when this season is over. They'd be positive rental pickups for teams more firmly in the playoff race.
Maybe the Kraken can hold off on moves until right before the March 6 deadline, just in case they heat up in a hurry. But it doesn't necessarily look good for them at the moment.
"The Kraken's playoff bubble is starting to burst, with a 41.2% chance of making the cut in the latest Bubble Watch, buoyed by Money Puck's outlier of a 68.4% probability," wrote ESPN's Greg Wyshynski in a new article on Thursday . "So what then happens to their unrestricted free agents, as GM Jason Botterill attempts to put his stamp on the team?"

The money isn't too pricey on either guy, relative to their value or relative to how much cap space other teams have. It may leave a few possibilities away from the negotiating table, but if Eberle and Schwartz are seriously going to be moved, there will be takers.
"Eberle ($4.75 million AAV, no-trade clause) and Schwartz ($5.5 million AAV, limited no-trade clause) seem primed for a move to a contender seeking scoring help on the wing," Wyshynski writes. "Eberle is the team captain, and their leading scorer through 54 games with 20 goals and 38 points."
The biggest problem with trading Eberle would likely be his role as captain. It's not so much that the Kraken would have to name a new one. It's just that sending away the captain in a deal really signals to the roster that this season isn't believed to be going anywhere.
Even if that's true, it's a tough message to send. So maybe the Kraken trade Schwartz and not Eberle. There's just a week to find out.
