At just 31 years old, 10-year veteran Kristaps Porzingis should be in the prime of his career. Certainly, when he signed that two-year contract with the Golden State Warriors back in June, he never imagined having to step away just five months later .
Nevertheless, Porzingis could no longer deny his current reality , which is why he's calling it quits (for now). In a shocking and emotional statement on social media, Porzingis revealed his status and explained the decision to put his career on hold.
"This season I was really looking forward to running it with this group, but as I ramped up, my body didn't respond the way I anticipated," wrote Porzingis in a statement . "I'm doing good, but I know what it takes, and I'm not where I want to be to perform at the level that I expect from myself. At this point, I've made the decision to prioritize my health and step away from the game I love. In this situation, I want to show the utmost respect for the Golden State Warriors and work with them to find a solution that makes sense. I'm thankful to my family and close ones for always being there. Much appreciation to all of you for the support."
With averages of 16.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 0.6 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game on 44.6% shooting in 2025-26, you can't entirely blame the Warriors for thinking Porzingis was ready to play a big role this season. On paper, he's the perfect floor spacer for Steph Curry and fills a position they've been lacking for years. Even so, there were signs that his health was unreliable.
For starters, there's his extensive injury history, which is enough by itself to cast serious doubt on his availability. Since his rookie year with the Knicks , Porzingis has only played 60 or more games in a season twice. There's also the fact that he agreed to a two-year deal this summer, with just $3 million guaranteed in 2027-28. If that was the best he could do, it likely means he was acutely aware of his own uncertain future.
Regardless of what Porzingis expected, it's a tragic and unfortunate turn for what was once such a promising career. Drafted fourth overall in 2015, the Knicks saw his potential, even if the fans didn't. Slowly but surely, he proved the team right, validating their pick by rising into a star.
In his third season, however, Porzingis' career experienced its first major setback with an ACL injury that kept him out for the entire following season. He came back as a Dallas Maverick, but his game was never the same again. Over the years, as he tried different roles on various teams, he was only ever able to show glimpses of his star potential before some injury would derail his progress.
Now, his time with the Warriors, and possibly in the NBA itself, has come to an end with practically nothing to show for it. As Porzingis prioritizes his health and seeks treatment from doctors, it's the Warriors who will have to adjust. Whether it's a simple buyout or a trade agreement, they are open to all options when it comes to turning Porzingis' contract into someone who can contribute now, and what they do next could determine their trajectory for many years to come.
