- Kyle Hamilton delivers a strong endorsement of Keyon Martin
It seems like it took forever for Baltimore Ravens training camp to arrive, but now we're all here. A couple of handfuls of practices and the first preseason game are already in the rearview mirror. Newly acquired veterans have settled in. Youngsters have gotten their feet wet. New coaches have found their place and are learning their players, and many of those players have spent much of training camp competing for larger roles and roster security.
Some arrive with draft pedigree and expectations attached to their names. Others have to earn attention one practice rep at a time. Keyon Martin falls into the latter category. The former undrafted free agent has spent the past year carving out a place for himself in Baltimore's secondary.

If Wednesday's joint practice against the Minnesota Vikings served as another opportunity to make an impression, Kyle Hamilton made it clear afterward that what observers saw was nothing new. Following practice, the three-time All-Pro spent a little less than five minutes with the media, more than enough time to praise several members of the secondary, including one Keyon Martin.
"It has been awesome (his response when asked how much he valued joint practice after being help out of the preseason opener). Like Chandler Rivers, [and] 'Key' [Keyon Martin], 'Key' is 'Key.' 'Key' is going to do what 'Key' does. He should not be shrugged off like that, but he has been doing it all camp. He did it last year, too, and there is a reason why he was signed as an undrafted guy. He just proves himself more and more every day."
Hamilton's comments revealed something important. Inside the Ravens ' building, Martin's emergence isn't seen as a surprise.
Keyon Martin has been building credibility for a while
Training camp often creates sudden narratives. A player makes a few splash plays, earns attention from fans and media, and quickly becomes one of the hottest names on the roster. Hamilton's comments suggest Martin's growth has been much more gradual than that. The veteran safety pointed out that Martin has been stacking positive performances dating back to last season.

That consistency is part of what has allowed him to remain in the conversation whenever Baltimore discusses its young defensive backs. The phrase Hamilton used may have been the most telling part of his answer.
"Key is going to do what Key does."
That isn't how teammates talk about a player who occasionally flashes. It's how they talk about someone they repeatedly trust to perform to a certain standard. Undrafted players rarely receive the benefit of the doubt. Every roster spot, practice rep, and opportunity must be earned.
Keyon Martin is earning respect the hard way.
That reality makes Hamilton's endorsement particularly meaningful. The Ravens safety wasn't simply complimenting Martin's physical ability. He was pointing to a player who continues to force people to reevaluate him. Every strong practice, every positive rep, and every appearance around the football creates another piece of evidence that Martin belongs.

Hamilton also grouped Martin alongside several of Baltimore's promising young defensive backs, including Chandler Rivers, T.J. Tampa Jr., Nate Wiggins, and Malaki Starks. That's notable company for a player who entered the league without hearing his name called during the draft.
For Martin, the challenge now is the same one it has always been: continue proving it. Based on Hamilton's comments, that's exactly what he has been doing for quite some time. While others may still be discovering who Keyon Martin is, the Ravens appear to have reached their conclusion long ago. Inside Baltimore's locker room, his performance is no longer viewed as unexpected. It's becoming expected.
That's an important distinction as the regular season approaches. Early in a player's career, the challenge is convincing coaches and teammates that he belongs. Eventually, the conversation shifts from whether a player can contribute to how much he can contribute. Hamilton's comments suggest Martin may be nearing that threshold for a former undrafted free agent, which represents significant progress.
The Ravens have invested heavily in their secondary and continue to search for young defensive backs capable of handling greater responsibilities. Martin still has more to prove, but the people who see him every day appear increasingly convinced. When one of the league's premier safeties describes a player by saying, "Key is going to do what Key does," that isn't praise built on potential. It's trust earned through repetition, consistency, and production. Those are often the first signs that a player is beginning to carve out a lasting place on an NFL roster.
