San Francisco 49ers quarterback Kurtis Rourke suffered three broken ribs and is likely done for the preseason according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Rourke suffered the injury in the 49ers' preseason opener vs. the Tennessee Titans and hasn't been on the practice field since then. The initial ailment wasn't specified with the team simply calling it a "ribs" injury for their 2025 seventh-round pick.
Shanahan told reporters after Tuesday's practice that the hope is for Rourke to return to the field after the 49ers' preseason finale Thursday vs. the Las Vegas Raiders .
Rourke's status for the 49ers' 53-man roster remains unclear. He was out for all of last season while recovering from offseason ACL surgery. The Titans game was his debut and he thrived, completing 12-of-14 throws for 101 yards. He looked healthy and showed off plus athleticism while navigating the pocket.
It's easy to see how the 49ers would want to keep Rourke with backup QB Mac Jones due to hit free agency next offseason. If they let Rourke go, he would be subject to waivers where he could be claimed by another team and the 49ers would lose their current backup signal caller of the future.
Rourke's return would give the 49ers a couple of additional opportunities to evaluate him before deciding on whether they'll keep him as the third QB on the 53-man roster, or if they're okay with placing him on waivers and potentially losing him.
