Finding a clear-cut favorite to win Super Bowl 60 isn't a particularly easy task.
The wide open nature of this year's postseason field provides some optimism that the San Francisco 49ers could make a run despite the rash of injuries that has left their roster without a couple of its biggest defensive stars. Typically a team as beat up as the 49ers will enter a postseason with no real opportunity to compete, but their 9-4 record and up-and-down performances from the presumed top teams throughout the league keep the door to the Super Bowl open.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan on Wednesday was asked about the 'wide open' NFL and he had an interesting perspective. While Shanahan does see this year's field as wide open, he doesn't see it as an outlier season from that standpoint.
"Yeah, I do think a lot of teams have a chance to win it all," Shanahan said. "I think that's pretty similar though to me most years. I mean, anytime you've got [ Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick] Mahomes and things like that, and you've got the [Buffalo Bills QB] Josh Allens and stuff, they're always the ones that you look at. But, there are a number of other teams, especially when you take guys like that out of the picture that are all capable. And when it's the NFL, which is different than all sports, when it's one game and not best of seven anybody's capable of winning. Now, you've got to be good enough to get to the Playoffs. You've got to be good enough to win three, possibly four in a row, which those are the challenges. But, on any given Sunday it's one game. That's to me why football's the best. It's never about a seven-game series and usually when it's one game any team can win. In a seven-game series, to me it's always usually the best team."
On paper the 49ers may not be favored in any potential postseason matchup they enter. However, they are playing their best football of the year after going 4-1 in November and finishing the month on a three-game win streak. Historically under Kyle Shanahan, November and December is this is the time of year the 49ers start playing their best football.
Without any clear-cut juggernauts sitting atop either conference, playing their best football might just be enough to help the 49ers sneak out some unlikely postseason wins.
