The Los Angeles Lakers are entering somewhat of a new era of the franchise this offseason, as LeBron James won't be returning to Hollywood for his 24th NBA season. After eight years and one championship with the Lakers, James is moving on and will finish his career elsewhere.
That leaves Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves as the cornerstones of the Lakers franchise moving forward as Rob Pelinka and the rest of the front office figures out how to build a title contender around them. Recently, Reaves inked a four-year, $185 million contract extension that will keep him with the team through at least 2029, with a player option for the 2029-30 season.
Recently, Reaves talked with ESPN's Dave McMenamin about his relationship with Doncic as the two move forward as the faces of the franchise.

"Luka, he's one of my best friends on this planet, talk to him almost every single day," Reaves said. "He sends me videos of his golf swing & asks me what he can do to get better & I tell him I'm not a coach."
Reaves then spoke about why he wanted to re-sign with LA and how the coaching staff impacted his decision.
"Just the people that are in this organization, how they run it. The coaching staff is a big reason. We see eye to eye on a lot of things, and their competitive nature is one of the biggest reasons."
Reaves wasn't necessarily in the plans for the future when the lakers picked him up as an undrafted free agent in 2021, but he has made it clear that he is one of the best guards in the NBA on the offensive end and deserves to be paid like one.
Despite playing just 51 games in 2025-26, Reaves had a career season. He averaged 23.3 points per game while shooting 49% from the field and 36% from the 3-point line. He is a perfect complement to Doncic on the court, and it seems like the two's growing relationship off the court is only strengthening their chemistry moving forward.
