The basketball court at Rocket Arena raised concerns after Los Angels Lakers guard Luka Doncic suffered an ankle injury in the team's 129-99 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers Wednesday, Jan. 28.
Doncic was shooting a jump shot in the first quarter when he backed off the court, injuring his left leg. The injury sent him to the locker room. He eventually returned later in the quarter and finished with 29 points, six assists and five rebounds in the loss.
That didn't diminish the scary nature of the incident for Doncic.
"I kind of got scared," Doncic told the Los Angeles Times. "It wasn't a great feeling, and looking back at the video I think I got a little bit lucky. It hurts obviously more now, but, just, I tried to go."
It raised an issue of safety regarding the arena's court, which is higher than the floor because of the ice used for the Lake Erie Monsters games.
Lakers coach JJ Redick was not happy with the situation.
"It is absolutely a safety hazard," Lakers coach JJ Redick said after Doncic was able to return later in the first quarter. "And I don't know why it's still like that. I don't. You know, you can lodge formal complaints. A lot of times you don't see any change when you lodge a formal complaint."
