The Los Angeles Lakers returned to Madison Square Garden on the anniversary of the Luka Doncic trade. As a result, the moment felt symbolic. One year after prying him away from the Mavericks in exchange for Anthony Davis , the spotlight turned to progress and pressure. At the same time, with key pieces still searching for rhythm, the game became a mirror of the season itself. Bright promise. Lingering gaps. Under those arena lights, Luka Doncic faced the question of how close this team truly is.

In that moment, the Lakers star delivered his answer after posting 30 points, 15 rebounds , and eight assists in a 112–100 loss to the New York Knicks . "I think we're in a good spot," Doncic said. "Obviously, got some work to do. … Today, we obviously missed a lot of good looks, but I think we have a great group." According to ESPN's Dave McMenamin, the words carried both confidence and caution.
Meanwhile, the Lakers stood in the same building where the blockbuster deal became official. Now, they sit at 29–19, sixth in the West. By contrast, the Mavericks sit at 19–30, 11th place, still searching for identity. With each passing week, the contrast grows louder.
The Lakers' season shaped by belief and absence
So far, Doncic's first year with the Lakers has been historic . First, he earned his sixth NBA All-Star selection and led Western Conference fan voting. At the same time, his regular season numbers show control and dominance: 33.6 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 8.8 assists per game. As a result, every night feels like an event.

However, the Lakers remain unfinished. Adjustments continue across the rotation. Chemistry resets. Wins come, but so do reminders of what is missing. Meanwhile, the Mavericks face their own setback as Anthony Davis is sidelined again by injury, a reminder of how the blockbuster trade reshaped both paths. Even so, in defeat, Doncic framed the future with confidence.
One year after the Luka Doncic trade that shocked the league, the Lakers own a superstar and a direction. For now, they need health and timing. With the window open, the question hangs in the air: will this group turn belief into a championship run?
