The Los Angeles Lakers ' aggressive offseason has reportedly earned the approval of the player whose opinion matters most.
After LeBron James informed the franchise he would continue his career elsewhere, the Lakers quickly reshaped their roster by acquiring Walker Kessler in a sign-and-trade while signing Sandro Mamukelashvili, Quentin Grimes and Collin Sexton in free agency. The organization also retained Austin Reaves , giving Luka Doncic a revamped supporting cast heading into the 2026-27 season.
According to The Athletic's Dan Woike, Doncic has been encouraged by the front office's approach.
"The Lakers' moves in free agency have been a hot topic in calls and texts among executives and agents, with plenty wondering if the Lakers overpaid for Walker Kessler and if they left themselves without any ammunition to upgrade the roster down the road."
Woike added that Los Angeles is not finished building its roster.
"While the team isn't done with its roster build — as we reported yesterday, the Lakers are looking at wings, with Jonathan Kuminga high on that list — its moves have received a thumbs up from the locker-room presence that matter most."
According to Woike, the franchise centerpiece has embraced the direction of the offseason.
"According to league sources, Luka Doncic was 'excited' about the Lakers' signings, with the team addressing his biggest desires for the roster by keeping Austin Reaves and getting an elite rim-protecting center in Kessler."
The report also noted that the organization has remained in close contact with Doncic throughout the offseason despite the All-NBA guard spending much of the summer in Europe.
"Those sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deals have not been completed, said the Lakers kept in regular communication with Doncic and his team despite a significant time gap, with the star guard spending his summer in Europe."
Luka Doncic 'excited' after Lakers' offseason overhaul
Los Angeles' overhaul came after several notable departures. Veteran guard Marcus Smart signed with the Houston Rockets , sharpshooter Luke Kennard joined the Phoenix Suns and center Jaxson Hayes agreed to a deal with the Utah Jazz .
The Lakers responded by prioritizing younger talent around Doncic. Kessler fills the team's long-standing need for a defensive anchor in the paint, while Mamukelashvili adds frontcourt versatility and floor spacing. Grimes strengthens the perimeter with his two-way play, and Sexton provides additional scoring and ball-handling in the backcourt.
Although some executives around the league have questioned the price Los Angeles paid to acquire Kessler, Woike's report suggests the moves have accomplished the organization's primary objective: building a roster that aligns with Doncic's vision.
With free agency still ongoing and additional upgrades potentially on the horizon, the Lakers appear committed to constructing a championship contender around their new franchise cornerstone. If Woike's reporting is any indication, the early returns have already left Doncic optimistic about the direction of the franchise.
