Lamine Yamal arrived at Wembley with the Ballon d'Or debate already surrounding him. He left London with another signature moment for his case. The Barcelona winger scored inside two minutes as Spain defeated England 3-2 in the Nations League on Saturday. His goal also made him the youngest player to score against England at Wembley in a competitive match.
The performance came days after Yamal openly said he deserved this year's award. Spain's comeback win added another stage to that argument. It also reinforced why his confidence is becoming one of the defining storylines of the 2026 Ballon d'Or race.

Yamal struck before Wembley could settle
Yamal needed only 1 minute and 45 seconds to put Spain ahead, pouncing after Marc Guéhi lost possession and finishing off the inside of the far post. England eventually turned the match around through Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane , but Spain recovered after halftime.
Álex Baena equalized in the 60th minute after Nico O'Reilly's misplaced pass gave Spain an opening. Mikel Oyarzabal then restored Spain's lead in the 74th minute, completing a 3-2 comeback that extended the world champions' unbeaten run to 39 matches.
Yamal's role was not limited to the opening goal. His early pressure helped set the tone, while his ability to attack space gave England's defense another problem throughout the match.

The Wembley record adds weight to the moment
At 19 years and 75 days, Yamal became the youngest player to score against England at Wembley in a competitive match. The previous mark belonged to Patrick Kluivert, who scored at Euro 1996 at 19 years and 353 days.
The goal was also the third-quickest England have conceded at Wembley. Only Nándor Hidegkuti for Hungary in 1953 and Tommy Ring for Scotland in 1957 scored earlier at the stadium, according to historical match statistics.
Yamal's early goal also gave Spain an immediate advantage in a match carrying major significance at Wembley. England were forced to respond from the opening stages, while Yamal added another notable moment to a growing international record at a remarkably young age.

His Ballon d'Or claim came before Wembley
Yamal's confidence was already public before Spain traveled to London. In a Movistar Plus interview released earlier this month, he said he and Kylian Mbappé were the two best players in the world and added that he deserved the Ballon d'Or because of what he had won.
That statement followed a more measured answer from Yamal at a news conference in Barcelona. He said he believed he had a chance after an incredible season but would not beg for votes, leaving the decision to the voters.

The timing matters because Yamal entered the Wembley match with a résumé built around team success as well as individual production. Barcelona retained La Liga, Yamal was named the league's best player for 2025-26, and Spain then won the 2026 World Cup.

The 2025 result still shapes his pursuit
Yamal finished second in the 2025 Ballon d'Or voting behind Ousmane Dembélé . UEFA's official results showed Dembélé on 1,380 points and Yamal on 1,059, giving the Barcelona winger a clear reference point as he entered another award cycle.
Yamal also won the Kopa Trophy in both 2024 and 2025, becoming the first player to win the award twice. His rapid rise has therefore already produced individual recognition at the highest level, even before the current Ballon d'Or vote.
The 2026 shortlist includes Yamal, Mbappé, Dembélé, Harry Kane, Erling Haaland , Jude Bellingham and other leading players. UEFA has scheduled the ceremony for Oct. 26 in London, keeping the award discussion firmly in the spotlight as the season develops.

Mbappé remains the central comparison
Yamal's own comments have made Mbappé the most prominent comparison in the 2026 discussion. The Real Madrid forward also has a substantial statistical case, having finished as the leading scorer in La Liga, the Champions League and the 2026 World Cup.
The difference between their cases is partly tied to individual production and team honors. Yamal has pointed to Barcelona's league title and Spain's World Cup triumph, while Mbappé's case is built heavily around his scoring output.
Their paths also intersected at the World Cup. Spain defeated France before winning the tournament, while Yamal and Mbappé entered the competition as two of the most closely watched young stars in international soccer.

Wembley keeps Yamal's momentum visible
The England match added another high-profile performance to Yamal's 2026 résumé without settling the Ballon d'Or vote. He scored early, created danger from the right side, and helped Spain respond after England briefly took control.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente praised Spain's control after the match, saying his team knew how to play "every moment" and had managed England's talent. Yamal's performance still stood out because his early goal gave Spain the lead before the match had settled.
The result gave Spain three points from its Nations League opener and another win over England at Wembley in a competitive match. For Yamal, the night added a record, a goal, and another major-stage performance to a Ballon d'Or campaign that he has already publicly embraced.
Fun fact: Lamine Yamal was photographed as a baby with Lionel Messi during a 2007 charity calendar shoot. The photo was taken when Messi was 20, and Yamal was only a few months old.
