- Lane Johnson’s retirement created a complicated cap decision
Lane Johnson's retirement ended one of the greatest careers in Eagles history. His contract could remain on Philadelphia's salary-cap ledger for several more years. Johnson carries a $20.3 million cap number for 2026, while Over the Cap lists approximately $41.6 million in potential dead money if Philadelphia immediately processes the retirement under the most expensive accounting scenario.
The larger question involves a $21.7 million option bonus that was scheduled to be paid in installments. Because Johnson retired while under contract, the Eagles could seek repayment or withhold the unpaid portion. The final cap consequences will depend on how much money Johnson keeps and when Philadelphia officially moves him to the reserve/retired list. If Johnson retains the entire bonus and the retirement is processed immediately, Over the Cap projects charge approximately $19 million in 2026 and $42.9 million in 2027.

Philadelphia has a less disruptive alternative. The Eagles can keep Johnson on the roster through the season and process his retirement with a post-June 1 designation in 2027. That approach would leave about $16.6 million in dead money next season, then push another $26.3 million into 2028. The latter route would largely follow the plan Philadelphia already expected to use when Johnson's contract ended. His departure came earlier than anticipated from a football perspective, but the Eagles had structured the deal with a possible 2027 separation in mind.
That makes Johnson's retirement manageable, although hardly painless. It also likely consumes one of Philadelphia's two available post-June 1 designations in 2027. Dallas Goedert's contract appears positioned for the other, limiting the Eagles' flexibility to add other veterans.
Johnson's departure therefore creates two problems. Philadelphia must replace an All-Pro right tackle immediately while accounting for substantial cap charges attached to a player no longer on the field. The Eagles can control when that money hits their books, but they cannot erase it.
