The Tennessee Titans left Sunday with one major injury.
The Titans lost 27-24 to the Cleveland Browns on a game-winning field goal. The team also lost its punter, Tommy Townsend , due to an injury.
Townsend was punting the ball away with under two minutes left in the second quarter. He did his usual kicking motion, and just before his kicking leg went back to the ground, a Browns player was blocked into him, and he was down after the play.
Townsend didn't return, and kicker Joey Slye was forced to perform the team's punting duties for the rest of the game.
The punter was a topic of conversation at Monday's Zoom call with head coach Robert Saleh. The head coach didn't have any other injury updates. The team is still trying to figure out how serious Townsend's injury truly is.
"All right, good morning, everybody," Saleh said. "No further injury updates. We're still evaluating Tommy."
Townsend was an offseason addition by the Titans. He joined the team on a two-year deal worth $6 million in free agency.
Before coming to the Titans, he spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs (2020-23) and the Houston Texans (2024-25). He was a Pro Bowler with the Chiefs in 2022.
Before the injury, he punted 30 times with 10 punts downed inside the 20-yard line.
Titans fans all held their collective breath when they saw Townsend go down at Nissan Stadium on Sunday. It had flashbacks to the gruesome injury that former punter Ryan Stonehouse suffered in a game against the Indianapolis Colts in 2023.
Stonehouse suffered a torn ACL, MCL, and a broken bone in his leg after the Colts blocked a punt and ran into him afterward. As expected, Stonehouse missed the rest of that season.
Stonehouse's tenure with the Titans was short but had plenty of good memories. Stonehouse was known for his rocket of a leg. He was able to get the ball downfield in a hurry, which was great for flipping field position.
After that season-ending injury, he stayed with the franchise for one more year. The team moved on from him after the 2024 season. He was last with the Miami Dolphins in 2025. The Dolphins waived him during final roster cuts later that year.
Hopefully, the injury to Townsend isn't long-term. Slye did a good job in relief, but the goal isn't to have him take on punting duties for the rest of the season.
When healthy, Townsend has proven he can be a solid punter. Hopefully, this is a minor setback, and he'll be able to return to the field sooner rather than later.
We'll see what other updates come out about Townsend throughout the week.
