The Toronto Blue Jays entered the 2026 season with a ton of optimism surrounding their starting rotation. They had too many starters after signing Max Scherzer, and it looked like they were going to have to move a couple to the bullpen, along with last season's breakout starter Eric Lauer. However, with Jose Berrios among those to suffer an injury, the Blue Jays' depth hasn't fully recovered.
Berrios also had injury issues last season during the playoffs, which led to his controversial departure from the team in the middle of the World Series. He apologized for those actions during Spring Training, but it now looks like he'll be away from the team even longer after a disappointing update , per Ben Nicholson-Smith via X, formerly Twitter.
"Jose Berrios going for an MRI tonight after feeling a little more sore than expected after his last start. Eric Lauer to stay in rotation for now while Jays assess next steps on Berrios," Nicholson-Smith reported.
Despite his great 2025 season, Lauer's 2026 has fans cringing at the prospect of him staying in the starting rotation for any longer. Lauer owns a 6.56 ERA over 10 games, with a 1.50 WHIP.
Berrios, Scherzer, Shane Bieber, and Cody Ponce were all pitchers who were projected to be above Lauer on the depth chart. Bieber and Scherzer are both trending toward returning in late-May, but until then, Lauer will have to continue to hold down the fort as the team's fifth starter.
Depending on the results of Berrios' MRI, the Jays could be looking at an extended absence.
