- LB Zaydrius Rainey-Sale is an Emerging Star for Washington Football

In his first full year as a starter, sophomore linebacker Zaydrius Rainey-Sale has made a strong case as the future focal point of Washington's defense. The second-year player is coming off a career-high 10 tackles against Nebraska and has shown noticeable progress in every outing this season.
As the No. 1-ranked high school player in the state of Washington in the 2025 class, the Bethel High School product pledged to his hometown school over Florida State and UCLA. In his first season on Montlake, the high-end athlete appeared in eight games, missing the first five contests of the season due to an ACL injury suffered in high school. After being able to go through his first full offseason at 100 percent, the homegrown star is thriving in his starting role.
"Shoot, if he plays like he did (Saturday) night, for the rest of his career, we'll all be happy," defensive coordinator Ryan Walters said during his Tuesday press conference. "So I don't know if there is immediate steps; it's just trying to improve daily and play consistently in practice and being consistent from week to week."
Already matching his total games played from last year, Rainey-Sale has doubled his productivity in 2026. Following the star performance in Lincoln, the sophomore has tallied 40 tackles, a sack, and 4 pass deflections this season. The leap in his development was on full display in Washington's 17-10 win over Nebraska, where he filled up the box score with a sack and a pass deflection on top of his 10 tackles.
Listed at 6-foot-2 and 240 pounds, he possesses the ability to handle numerous responsibilities in Walters' scheme, especially given the Huskies ' elite depth at the position. Whether it's getting downhill, making plays in coverage, or creating havoc in the backfield, the young star has proven to be a Swiss Army knife in the center of the Husky defense, and Halloween night was a perfect example.
With a homecoming matchup against a mild-mannered Penn State offense coming up, this Saturday will be another opportunity for the Tacoma native to show off his dynamic skill set. According to his defensive coordinator, that shouldn't be an issue.
