Juventus entered their midweek clash against Genoa in high spirits following an encouraging 2-0 away victory against Lecce over the weekend. That victory seemed to signal a turning point, showcasing what looked like a new, effective tactical framework capable of consistently delivering results. With momentum on their side and a squad showing promising signs of cohesion, there was optimism that the team could build on that performance and establish real consistency.
However, any hope of continuing that momentum evaporated almost immediately after kickoff.
Juventus were completely overrun from the opening minutes as Genoa exploited vast open spaces with an unrelenting barrage of early counter-attacks. Plagued by structural confusion and defensive lapses, Juventus lost control of the tempo and quickly found themselves trailing by two goals before they could ever settle into the match.
Despite some halftime adjustments and an improved effort in the second half, the early damage proved far too severe to overcome. Here is how each player performed on a disappointing night at the Luigi Ferraris:
GUGLIELMO VICARIO — 4.5.Vicario could hardly be faulted for either of Genoa's goals, but he ultimately conceded on the only two shots on target he faced. While he was decent with his feet and stepped up to sweep behind a high defensive line as the team chased the game, he did little beyond the bare minimum required of him.
FEDERICO GATTI — 5.Gatti made a few early interventions and cleared four balls, but the chaotic nature of the match prevented him from ever finding a rhythm. He spent the first half covering an enormous amount of ground — shifting from center-back out of possession to an emergency target man up front — before being withdrawn at halftime to facilitate a tactical switch to a back four.
BREMER — 5.5.Despite facing a relentless series of Genoa counterattacks, Bremer finished with modest defensive statistics, tallying just one tackle, one interception, and one clearance. Nevertheless, he did well to force several dangerous breakaways into low-quality attempts, while also finishing second on the team in pass attempts and leading in passes completed into the final third.
JHON LUCUMÍ — 5.Like his central partner, Lucumí had limited direct defensive interventions, recording only one interception and one clearance. However, he was repeatedly left exposed by the system and did a commendable job limiting the damage on counterattacks. He also led the team in total pass attempts and ranked second in passes into the final third.
PIERRE KALULU— 4.Kalulu had a night to forget, highlighted by a poorly chosen pass during a early 2-v-1 counter-attack that completely killed the scoring opportunity. Though he led the team in total defensive contributions and showed brief moments of recovery, his overall display was erratic, below average, and heavily flawed in possession.
DOUGLAS LUIZ— 3.5.Expected to dictate the tempo and orchestrate the offense, Douglas Luiz was virtually invisible throughout his time on the pitch. Despite high pass numbers, he created just a single low-xG chance, offered minimal progressive passing, and contributed very little defensively, directly feeding into the team's lack of control.
PAPE MATAR SARR — 5.Sarr delivered an unspectacular, functional performance in his box-to-box role. He quietly contributed across the board with steady passing, defensive work, and one chance created, making him one of the very few players who simply did the job asked of him without glaring errors.
ANDREA CAMBIASO— 3.It was a nightmare performance from Cambiaso, whose poor clearance directly gifted Genoa their opening goal. He provided almost no threat in the final third, was uninvolved in possession, and put his goalkeeper under pressure with careless backpasses, acting as a liability across every phase of the game.
WESTON McKENNIE — 6.5.McKennie was Juventus' best outfield starter despite being shifted across multiple positions, including the wing and the number 10 role. He created two chances and completed multiple long balls — including a spectacular pass laid perfectly into Kolo Muani's path across the pitch — and was one of the few players capable of creating dangerous moments in an otherwise dysfunctional setup.
KERIM ALAJBEGOVIĆ — 4.Alajbegović was largely isolated on the wing during his 45 minutes, completing few passes and failing to hit the mark with his crosses. He did manage to lead the team in shots with three attempts, but none truly threatened the opposition goal.
RANDAL KOLO MUANI — 3.Kolo Muani suffered through a genuinely dreadful 90 minutes, failing to register a single shot despite spending being the only player to spend 90 minutes playing as a forward. Aside from setting up a brilliant close-range chance that was subsequently missed, his heavy first touch and poor decision-making repeatedly broke down the team's attack.
NICK WOLTEMADE — 5.Woltemade provided a clear focal point after coming on at the break, leading the team in both shots and expected goals, including a late attempt in stoppage time. His presence noticeably improved the team's attacking fluidity, even if he failed to convert his prime scoring chance.
EDON ZHEGROVA — 6.Zhegrova injected much-needed energy into the second half, completing three dribbles — more than the entire starting lineup combined — and assisting the highest xG output of any player. Alongside Woltemade, he transformed the attack and gave Juventus a real threat on the ball, though it ultimately yielded no goals.
JÉRÉMIE BOGA — 5.5.Boga made an immediate impact off the bench, completing two dribbles, taking a shot, and generating a late high-quality chance for Woltemade. Though his production was somewhat aided by Genoa sitting deep to defend their lead, his directness gave the team a much-needed spark.
JUAN CABAL — 5.5.Cabal offered a steady, reliable presence after replacing Cambiaso at the back. He contributed three passes into the final third alongside a couple of key defensive interventions, putting in a tidy 30-minute shift.
TEUN KOOPMEINERS — NR.With only 13 minutes on the pitch against a deep-lying defense, Koopmeiners completed six passes into the final third, though there was too little time to make too big of an impact.
Coming off the victory over Lecce, Luciano Spalletti opted for continuity in his starting lineup, making only two functional changes by bringing in Alajbegović and Sarr. However, the system itself was completely unrecognizable from the start: McKennie was shifted out of his effective central role, Douglas Luiz sat higher, and Alajbegovic was dropped too deep on the flank to act as a proper outlet or creator. The initial setup was tactically flawed and left Juventus entirely open to Genoa's early counter-attacking strategy.
To his credit, Spalletti recognized his mistakes early and managed the second half well with proactive substitutions. Bringing on Woltemade, Zhegrova, Cabal, and Boga restored structure, added directness, and gave the team control of the match, even if the scoreboard didn't reflect it. Ultimately, while his in-game management was sharp, the disastrous starting tactical blueprint proved too costly to recover from.
