Jamie Vardy 's ascent from non-league obscurity to Premier League champion is one of the most extraordinary stories in English football, a journey that sets him apart even from other celebrated late bloomers like Ian Wright. While Wright worked his way up from Sunday league football to become Arsenal 's second all-time top scorer and an England international, Vardy's path was steeper still.
Released by Sheffield Wednesday at 16, "Vards" spent years in the eighth tier working in a carbon fibre factory before climbing all the way to lift the EPL trophy with Leicester City at 29. No other player this writer can find has started as far down the pyramid or reached such heights at such a late stage , making his 2015/16 title triumph a truly one-of-a-kind achievement.
Vardy remained the Foxes ' talismanic figure for around a decade, but as the Leicestershire outfit's fortunes declined and they slipped down the divisions, his time at King Power Stadium came to an end. He secured a move to Serie A, yet the spell in Italy proved short-lived: he and his family struggled to settle into life abroad, finding the cultural and lifestyle shift far more challenging than anticipated, so he returned after just a single season.
LCFC probably hoped to negotiate a deal that would bring their legendary No.9 back for an uptick as well as a final farewell, but Vardy made it clear he had no interest in returning, insisting that chapter of his life was now firmly closed. It is widely believed that Jon Rudkin, City's so-called chief football officer, is the primary reason a reunion never happened, with rumours of a long-standing rift that were amplified by public comments from Vardy's wife, Rebekah.
The striker also previously ruled out a return to boyhood club Wednesday, stating he always looks forward rather than back, even though he spent his formative years there. Yet Owls owner David Storch has confirmed they are exploring ways to bring Vardy to the club, attempting to 'clear restrictions' to devise a palatable offer for the Vardys that would 'make sense', report Leicester Mercury .
Storch is obviously undeterred by Vardy's earlier stance. For Foxes fans, the prospect of seeing their greatest-ever modern striker lining up against them in the same division is unthinkable; the scenario they will dread more than any other this season , aside from insignificance.
