- Lions vs. Dolphins: 3 key matchups
The Detroit Lions (5-2) take their talents to South Beach to take on the Miami Dolphins (1-6). Fresh off a three-game win streak, including two in a row against the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings, the Lions have reestablished themselves as true NFC North contenders .
Despite the back-to-back-to-back victories, the Lions still find themselves currently in third place in the division. This week, the Chicago Bears take on the rising Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Minnesota Vikings host Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills on "Monday Night Football." If the Lions take care of their business, there is a realistic opportunity that Dan Campbell's team will sit alone at the top of the standings.

From just about every performance and talent metric, the Lions should have the edge in this matchup. But digging deeper, the Dolphins are rebuilding in a way that should remind Lions fans of the Dan Campbell led 2021 team.
In what could typically be labeled a "trap game," often the NFL rears its powerful element of parity into the equation. To avoid that, the key matchups will come down to not necessarily the talent on the field, the grit of the players to determine the ultimate outcome.
Let's dive in to the three key matchups centered on the intangible traits that will make or break Sunday's matchup in south Florida.
Gritty rookies in key roles
Breaking the normal structure of the article here as this first key matchup really is not a direct positional or players matchup, but the comparative play of the key rookies on each team. While many readers here at Pride of Detroit are familiar the Grit Index, for newer readers, it is the NFL Draft metric that Erik Schlitt and I have created to grade prospects on their intangible qualities.

In the 2026 NFL Draft, seven teams drafted players in the elite tier of the Grit Index with a score of 9+. The Detroit Lions and Miami Dolphins were two of those teams.
For the Lions, it was Blake Miller, Keith Abney, and Skyler Gill-Howard. For the Dolphins, it was Jacob Rodriguez and Michael Taaffe.
You could call it coincidence, but I am not surprised that each of these five rookies have become key contributors for their respective teams. In fact, Rodriguez and Taaffe are first and second, respectively, in snaps played on the entire Dolphins roster. Similarly, Miller, Abney, and Gill-Howard lead the Lions 2026 rookie draft class in snap counts on the season.

They key here with all five of these players is which one will either rise to the occasion, or which one will be a potential liability? Rookies go through growing pains and not all progress is linear. Will Taaffe rise to the occasion against the Lions elite offensive weapons? Will Rodriguez command and communicate the defense to his teammates as the green dot linebacker against the creatively-detailed Lions offense run by offensive coordinator Drew Petzing and Jared Goff?
Will the Lions rookies take their strong starts to the next level, or will it be a game filled with growing pains coming off a three-game win streak?
The play of these rookies will go a long way in determining the outcome of the game.
The Lions' linebacker room
This is a big week. At this point, we're all aware of and have been in the emotional waiting room following the updates and progression after Jack Campbell's traumatic neck injury against the Vikings. The impact, though, is most significantly felt by those players closest to him.

The key matchup is not how fellow linebackers Derrick Barnes, Malcolm Rodriguez, and Trevor Nowaske fill in Jack Campbell's shoes, no player will be able to do that for this team. And I don't suspect they are trying to.
The key is how Barnes, Rodriguez, and Nowaske can play as the best version of themselves and as a unit while battling this adversity on and off the field.
In my view, having Kelvin Sheppard as defensive coordinator, former linebacker coach, and former linebacker himself, he is in a unique position to lead these players through this storm. Sheppard has expressed nothing but confidence in the group.
"I raised these other guys that are about to play. Malcolm Rodriguez and Derrick Barnes, those are my little brothers and they know the standard. They both have worn the green dot before. So, this isn't like a first-time ordeal for either one of them, because that load might get shared. We're still working through that, but I'm confident in either one of them."
I don't expect this group to be perfect as each player adapts to their adjusted roles. But I do expect each to play with passion and grit. I expect them to prepare and play like 46.

Zach Sieler vs. Lions interior offensive line
Lastly, turning to the leader of the Dolphins, captain Zach Sieler is not only the fins most disruptive player on defense, he is the heart and soul of the team.
Dan Campbell has emphasized Sieler's impact.
"Defensively, Sieler's really the anchor in there. You know, he's played good football for a really long time, man. Smart, crafty, powerful, can get an edge in the pass game."
Relentless in both the run and pass game, Sieler will present a challenge to the youth of the Lions interior offensive line. With starting center Cade Mays not practicing and a wave of injuries on defense , the Lions can control the game if Christian Mahogany, Juice Scruggs, and Tate Ratledge can continue to win the line of scrimmage along the interior.

In a game where, On Paper, the Lions have a distinct advantage, players like Sieler can lead the charge in a spoiler's effort.
Three key matchups. Three opportunities for grit to win the day.
