Harvey Elliott left Liverpool late in the summer window needing minutes, rhythm and a clean runway. What he has found at Valencia, so far, is disorder.
The 23-year-old moved to Spain on a season-long loan, with no option to buy, and remains under contract at Anfield until 2028. That matters, because this was supposed to be a development loan, a practical solution for a player pushed out of the immediate picture under Andoni Iraola after being omitted from Liverpool's matchday squads for the opening two Premier League fixtures. Instead, it has quickly become a messy situation.
Elliott's start was undermined almost immediately by questions over his condition. Reports in Spain claimed he had arrived "out of shape" and "well overweight for his physique" after an "atypical pre-season". Fair or not, once that label sticks, every appearance is judged through it.
Then Valencia changed manager. Carlos Corberan was dismissed and Javier Aguirre came in. New coach, new priorities, same underlying issue: Elliott had no settled platform. For a loanee already trying to establish himself, that is a bad combination.

The latest blow came in the 2-1 home defeat to Villarreal on 24 October. Elliott came off the bench for what was his sixth appearance and lasted until the closing stages before talking himself into trouble. Two quick yellow cards, the second for dissent, brought the first red card of his career in the 89th minute.
He responded publicly, writing: "I made a mistake and I'm truly sorry." It was the right thing to do, though apologies do not alter the facts. He will miss the trip to Elche on 1 November and is expected back for the home game against Real Madrid on 7 November.
This is where it gets awkward. Valencia are 19th in La Liga, working through upheaval off the pitch and poor form on it. Elliott has yet to start a league game. Across six appearances, he has managed 152 minutes, no goals and no assists. That is not a contribution, it is a footnote.
And the noise around a possible early end to the Valencia loan is growing. One well-placed observer put it bluntly: "Honestly, if the option to terminate the loan arises, Valencia will likely pursue it." The reasoning is straightforward. "With a new sporting director and manager – compounded by the team's poor form – it seems they will look to undo many of the moves made by the previous sporting director.
"They need to free up space within the salary cap to make changes to the squad, so they will likely take any opportunity to cut ties with players brought in under the previous regime."
He was also described as "a significant disappointment", though there is at least some mitigation, with recognition that Elliott has been working hard and looks sharper physically in recent weeks. Right now, though, the Valencia loan is going nowhere fast.
