The New York Islanders made a dramatic late-season coaching change on Sunday, dismissing Patrick Roy and appointing Peter DeBoer with only four games remaining. The situation had taken on real urgency, as the Islanders (42-31-5) had lost four straight and seven of their past 10, sliding out of a comfortable playoff position while getting outscored 37-26 in the process.

DeBoer's contract is not a short-term fix. He is signed for the remainder of the 2025-26 season plus three additional years, keeping him in New York through the 2028-29 campaign , per ESPN's Emily Kaplan. The deal aligns with general manager Mathieu Darche's tenure, indicating a strategic commitment over an interim approach.
Just one week earlier, the Islanders were second in the Metropolitan Division, holding a three-point buffer over non-playoff teams. However, losses, including an 8-3 defeat to the Pittsburgh Penguins last week and back-to-back setbacks against division rivals the Philadelphia Flyers and Carolina Hurricanes , erased that margin. At the time of the coaching change, New York trailed both the Philadelphia and the Ottawa Senators by one point in the playoff race, with both teams holding games in hand. Playoff odds had dropped drastically, with projections ranging from 19.8% to 31.4%.
Roy, who went 97-78-22 across parts of three seasons and led the team to the 2024 playoffs, faced mounting pressure as inconsistency, coupled with the current downturn, led the management to act. He became the fourth NHL coach dismissed this season.
DeBoer arrives with a wealth of experience and a proven track record. Over 1,261 regular-season games, he holds a 662-447-152 record, ranking fourth in points percentage (.585) among active coaches with at least 700 games. His 662 wins rank among the top 20 all-time and sixth among active coaches. In the playoffs, he owns a 97-82 record in 179 games and has reached the Conference Final in six of the past eight seasons, including three straight with the Dallas Stars .
