Louisiana Tech arrives as the hot team, and the market has noticed. The Bulldogs have won four straight, starting with two games that could have gone either way, a 31-29 win over Army and a 32-31 win over Louisiana, and then pulling away with back-to-back shutouts, 24-0 at UL Monroe and 26-0 over Old Dominion . Quarterback Blake Baker has been the engine lately.
He went 28-of-34 for 303 yards against the Monarchs, with tight end Eli Finley catching 10 passes for 128 yards and Jalen Mickens adding eight for 110. That's a team playing with confidence and balance, but it's worth remembering who the shutouts came against: UL Monroe was winless at the time and Old Dominion has two wins.
The Bulldogs also come to Mobile with running back Dylone Brooks and receiver Dane Benedix listed with undisclosed injuries.
South Alabama comes in with something to prove and more time than usual to prove it. The Jaguars were off to a strong run, scoring in bunches behind Jared Hollins, who took over at quarterback after Bishop Davenport was hurt and had thrown for 855 yards and seven touchdowns over his previous four games, before an ugly 20-13 loss at Marshall on October 20, when they managed just 326 yards on 4.3 yards per play.
They've had 11 days since then, which is plenty of time to clean up the offense and game plan for a Louisiana Tech team that leans on Baker's accuracy.
The concerns are on the other side of the ball, where South Alabama gave up 35 to UL Monroe and 49 to Arkansas State in its last two wins, and at receiver, where Jerrian Graham, Brian Barnes, Khatori Marion, and tight end Maddox Lynch are all listed with undisclosed injuries.
This is a solid fit for the "Normal Rest Contrarian Dogs" system:
The system looks for teams with a full week or a little longer to prepare that are facing line movement against them, and the market has moved toward Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs opened -4.5 and are now -5.5, and the moneyline has stretched from South Alabama +142 at the open to +180, with Louisiana Tech going from -176 to -210.
It's October, the spread is in the moderate range, and the extra preparation time favors the team that has had longer to study its opponent. The market has priced in Louisiana Tech's four-game winning streak, but the same streak includes a one-point win and a two-point win, and the two shutouts came against teams with a combined two wins.
The matchup offers South Alabama a path. The Jaguars' offense had been scoring at will before the Marshall game, averaging nearly 39 a game on the season and 54 against Sun Belt opponents, and that offense, rested and settled at quarterback, is the kind that can keep pace with Baker.
Louisiana Tech's recent games have been decided by its quarterback and defense, so a Jaguars team that is rested, settled at quarterback, and at home can make this a game that comes down to the last possession.
At +180, South Alabama only needs to win about 36% of the time to be profitable, which is a reasonable bar for a rested home team.
Pick: South Alabama ML (+180, FanDuel)
