Louisville did not need a regular-season game to make an early statement about its potential. The Cardinals traveled to Allen Fieldhouse on Wednesday night and delivered an impressive 89-83 exhibition victory over Kansas, giving college basketball fans an early look at a team that could become a serious contender.

The win was particularly noteworthy considering the setting.
Kansas entered the matchup having won 58 consecutive home exhibition games, a streak dating back to the 1990s. Louisville ended that remarkable run with a combination of perimeter shooting, defensive energy and timely contributions from several newcomers.
For coach Pat Kelsey, the performance provided an encouraging early indication of what his revamped roster might accomplish.
Jackson Shelstad delivers impressive performance
Former Oregon guard Jackson Shelstad led Louisville with 23 points, demonstrating why his arrival was considered one of the Cardinals' most important offseason additions. Shelstad made eight of his 15 field-goal attempts and helped Louisville maintain its composure against a talented Kansas team.
His experience and scoring ability should become valuable assets for a Cardinals program hoping to compete near the top of the ACC.

Louisville also received an impressive contribution from freshman Obinna Ekezie Jr. The highly regarded center finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots in just 19 minutes.
Those numbers are particularly encouraging considering Ekezie's youth and the level of competition. The freshman displayed the ability to influence the game on both ends of the floor, providing interior defense while contributing offensively.
Louisville also demonstrated impressive perimeter shooting, connecting on 46.7% of its 3-point attempts. The Cardinals' bench outscored Kansas' reserves 35-13, another important factor in the victory.

Kansas faces important questions before regular season
The result should not create panic for Kansas, but it provides Bill Self with several areas to evaluate. The Jayhawks entered the preseason ranked No. 17 nationally and have another significant exhibition matchup against Duke scheduled for Sunday.
Kansas controlled the paint against Louisville, finishing with a 40-20 advantage in points scored inside. However, the Jayhawks struggled to match Louisville's perimeter production and bench scoring.
Freshman Tyran Stokes, one of the nation's most highly regarded recruits, experienced a difficult shooting performance. Stokes finished 3-of-13 from the field, illustrating the adjustment even elite prospects can face against experienced college competition.

Kansas has time to address those concerns before the regular season begins.
For Louisville, the victory creates immediate excitement. The Cardinals entered the preseason ranked No. 11 nationally and are beginning their third season under Kelsey. Wednesday's performance suggests the program has assembled another roster capable of competing against prominent opponents.
Exhibition results do not count toward the standings, and neither team should be judged entirely on one October performance. Still, Louisville's victory at Allen Fieldhouse was difficult to ignore. The Cardinals have given college basketball fans an early reason to pay attention.
