The LSU Tigers gave the home crowd something to cheer for on Friday afternoon as they cruised to a 116-58 victory over the Jacksonville Dolphins in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
As with most games this year, it was a fairly evenly balanced outing for most of the Tigers' starting lineup. A whopping seven LSU players were in double digits. Only two Dolphins did the same.
Mikaylah Williams earns the player of the game honors with an 18-point, 10-assist double-double. Whenever she gets into her bag as a playmaker, her game goes up a level. She was also 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.
The team's overall inability to really be effective from three is worrying for later in the tournament. They were just 6-of-21 from deep as a team.
Flau'jae Johnson, who is playing in her final tournament, led all scorers with 20 points on 7-of-14 from the field.
It was an all-around dominant performance for the Tigers. They shot 60% from the field as a team, despite their poor showing from three, as well as 27 total steals and blocks.
The Tigers will face either the No. 10-seeded Villanova Wildcats or the No. 7 Texas Tech Red Raiders on Sunday, at a time yet to be determined.
The Red Raiders ended the season 25-7 and were the No. 25 team in the AP Poll. They were upset in the second round of the Big 12 tourney by the Kansas State Wildcats. Villanova was 25-7 as well, also getting an early boot from the Big East tournament.
