Lucas Giolito was once considered to be one of the best starting pitchers in MLB. He finished within the top 11 of Cy Young voting in each season from 2019-2021. While he did struggle for a few years after that, Giolito had a bounce back season in 2025 with the Boston Red Sox , pitching to a 3.41 ERA across 26 starts. So how is it that a 31-year-old starter who has a proven track record and performed at a respectable level in 2025 is still unsigned in MLB free agency? Well, Lucas Giolito addressed that question during a recent interview, via Baseball Isn't Boring.

"The last few months has been very strange to where, you know, talks seem like they're heating up and then it's like, 'Oh, okay, never mind.' I just want to play for close to what my value is," Giolito said. "Everything is based on these models now, right? Everyone uses projection and models and things like that to kinda determine and, like, my agency does the same thing. It's like, alright cool, give me something that's relatively close to that and let's go and get it. That's why I'm here."
Giolito continued by explaining he is throwing and "staying ready" for a potential opportunity. He is also maintaining a pitch count of 75 and building up for the season despite remaining unsigned at the moment.
Giolito has been linked to a number of MLB teams in rumors. The Red Sox appreciated what Giolito gave their team last year . It is quite surprising that a ball club has yet to sign the veteran right-hander. While he may not be a Cy Young contender anymore, Giolito can likely still impact a rotation in a significant manner.
One has to imagine he will return to MLB at some point fairly soon. It remains to be seen which team he will end up with, however.
