- ‘Made Me Think About Coming Back’ — 5-Time Pro Bowler Terron Armstead Reveals the 1 QB Who Nearly Got Him to Unretire

The last few years have featured some notable NFL comebacks. Philip Rivers came out of retirement last season to play for the Indianapolis Colts , while Los Angeles Rams legend Aaron Donald returned for another season with the team in 2026.
Now, former offensive tackle Terron Armstead has revealed that he also considered coming out of retirement. In his case, one quarterback made him seriously consider suiting up again.
A former third-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, Armstead spent nearly a decade with the New Orleans Saints before joining the Miami Dolphins for his final three seasons.
Armstead holds the record for the fastest 40-yard dash for an offensive lineman in NFL Combine history at 4.71 seconds. He was also highly productive throughout his career, earning five Pro Bowl selections and becoming a standout on the Drew Brees -led Saints.
During an appearance on "CBS Sports HQ" this week, he discussed his former franchise and how it has transformed under Tyler Shough.
"They have found their guy, and he will be the guy for the foreseeable future. I'm such a Tyler Shough fan. I'm such a Tyler Shough guy," Armstead said .
"He is everything you want from the franchise guy. He's the leader that you want. His accountability is through the roof. His willingness to compete, his desire to win."

Armstead has praised Shough's leadership and competitive mentality, but the quarterback's production has also been hard to ignore. Taking over midway through his rookie season last year, he tallied 2,384 passing yards and 13 total touchdowns in nine starts.
This year, Shough endured a difficult first half against the Detroit Lions in Week 1 before producing a remarkable turnaround. He threw for 325 yards and three touchdowns in the second half and overtime against Detroit, helping New Orleans erase a 21-point deficit and force OT.
He then helped New Orleans complete another comeback against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 2. Shough ranks No. 18 in PFN QB Impact Score with a grade of 74.0 through two weeks.

He currently leads the league with 662 passing yards through two games and has five total touchdowns. That production, combined with the intangibles Armstead sees in him, made the Saints quarterback a big reason Armstead considered a comeback.
"There's no bigger fan in sports than me with Tyler Shough," Armstead claimed.
"We sat for an hour in the episode and maybe four hours after, and just hung out and talked. When I tell you, I had never thought about coming back from retirement before this moment sitting with Tyler Shough."
Ultimately, the comeback did not happen, and Armstead continues to enjoy life after retirement. But Armstead's praise for Shough is notable given his experience playing nearly a decade alongside Brees in New Orleans.
Shough will now look to build on his strong start when the Saints return to action in Week 3, while Armstead will continue watching from the sidelines after admitting Shough briefly made him consider a comeback.
