One area where the Miami Marlins must improve is defense, and part of that equation is settling on an official everyday center fielder. It's one of the most important positions on the diamond, and contending teams always seem to find a big bat or a speedy glove man there.
While it seems the Fish already have their answer in the fold, baseball operations president Peter Bendix and the Miami front office keep looking for upgrades. And they know they need a burner that can make a diving catch on a dime, but still has enough horsepower in his arm to light up an overaggressive baserunner.

The Marlins don't have a five-tool kind of guy like the Seattle Mariners' Julio Rodriguez or the Chicago Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong; they're a team that believes the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. In other words, the brain trust in the 305 believes they can find enough 'good' pieces to construct a great team.
The clear incumbent is Jakob Marsee . He established himself as Miami's primary center fielder, appearing in 152 games at the position. However, he hit just .231 with 11 home runs, 41 RBI, and 23 stolen bases. So, the speed is there, but the Fish would still likely appreciate a little more offensive production.
Marsee has earned the opportunity to remain Miami's starting center fielder, at least for now. But he hasn't done enough to make the position untouchable. And if the Marlins are serious about improving defensively and offensively, other players must get worthy consideration when Spring Training 2027 rolls around.
Marlins Have In-House Options
Cannarella represents a highly compelling option for the organization. Selected by Miami in the supplemental first round of the 2025 draft, the Clemson product has given the team strong reasons for optimism throughout his development.

Across 367 minor-league at-bats in 2026, he posted an impressive .324 batting average, launching 15 home runs, driving in 57 runs, stealing 21 bases, and recording a .934 OPS. His standout .422 on-base percentage highlights a proven knack for reaching base and setting up scoring opportunities for the rest of the lineup.
That's the kind of dynamic player that manager Clayton McCullough needs to be able to write on his lineup card. He's a perfect fit, despite having a bit of a subpar throwing arm.
"Cannarella's biggest selling point remains his defense in center field," the youngster's official MLB scouting analysis states . "He's a true burner who runs efficient routes and can make highlight plays. Cannarella has long had a below-average throwing arm, which seemed even less efficient after the shoulder surgery."
Meanwhile, Ruiz offers the Marlins a dynamic alternative if they choose to emphasize elite speed and outfield coverage. During his 2026 campaign, he stole 34 bases over 213 at-bats, though he struggled at the plate with a .216 average, six home runs, and 17 RBI.

While his .333 on-base percentage and .699 OPS signal clear room for growth in his offensive game, his game-changing athleticism remains a rare asset. At 27 years old, Ruiz brings valuable experience to the center-field battle and adds an intriguing element to the roster competition.
Above all this, the Marlins could swing a trade or sign a veteran bat that would quash this entire debate. But for now, center field is Marsee's job, even though many fans in South Florida may be calling for Cannarella by May.
