Manchester City have completed the signing of goalkeeper Pierce Charles from Sheffield Wednesday, with the Northern Ireland international putting pen to paper on a five-year contract that keeps him at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2031.
Charles returns to a club where he previously developed as a youngster, having been part of Manchester City 's academy setup before departing to join Sheffield Wednesdayin the summer of 2021 at the age of 16, making his move to the Etihad Stadium a homecoming as much as a new chapter in his career.
The 20-year-old made his senior professional debut for Wednesday in January 2024 and went on to accumulate 36 appearances for the south Yorkshire club across all competitions, establishing himself as one of the more highly regarded young goalkeepers in the Championship over the course of his time there.

His elder brother Shea is a former Manchester City player, adding a family dimension to a signing that carries personal significance well beyond the purely professional for a goalkeeper who has waited patiently for the right opportunity to return to one of the game's most prestigious academies.
Charles's progress has also been recognised at international level, with the Northern Ireland international having earned 12 caps for his country to date – a tally that speaks to the consistency of performance he has delivered for Wednesday while still in the early stages of a senior career that City are now committed to helping develop further.
Speaking to official Manchester City media following the announcement of his signing, Charles conveyed the personal weight of a return he described as something that carries deep meaning for both himself and his family.
"To be back at Manchester City is a very special and proud moment for me and my family," said Charles. "I know first hand what a special club City is and I'm so excited about the future."
The goalkeeper went on to address his imminent loan move to Queens Park Rangers, framing it not as a delay to his City career but as an essential component of the development pathway the club have mapped out for him.
He added: "City take development of young players very seriously so I know my loan to QPR will only help me grow and improve as a player.
Pierce Charles agrees to Manchester City return – Hugo Viana makes 2026-27 decision
"I'll now give everything I can for a successful season in the Championship before hopefully returning to Manchester a better goalkeeper."
Director of football Hugo Viana also offered his reaction to the completion of a signing that underlines the club's continued commitment to identifying and securing young goalkeeping talent capable of developing into long-term assets at the Etihad Stadium.
"Pierce is someone whose progress we've been following closely, and we're delighted to welcome him back to Manchester City," said Viana.
"Pierce has already learned a lot during his time at Sheffield Wednesday but is still very young and hungry to further progress and develop.
"He also knows the club and is very much aligned with the values we all share. We are very happy to have secured Pierce's signing and are excited to now help in his future career development."
The structure of the deal – a five-year contract followed immediately by a Championship loan – signals clearly that Manchester City view Charles as a future first-team prospect rather than a short-term squad solution, with the QPR move providing the consistent senior minutes that the Etihad Stadium's competitive goalkeeping depth would make difficult to guarantee in the immediate term.
Manchester City plotting five summer signings with Elliot Anderson set to lead rebuild
City's new manager Enzo Maresca is currently assembling his squad and backroom structure for the 2026-27 campaign, with the goalkeeping position among the areas subject to ongoing review as the new manager works through his assessment of the options available to him heading into his debut season.
For Charles, a full season of Championship football at QPR offers precisely the kind of extended, high-intensity environment that Viana and the club's sporting structure have identified as the most effective next step for a young goalkeeper at his stage of development.
Whether Charles returns from his loan spell in west London having staked a genuine claim for a place in Maresca's first-team plans, or requires further loan experience before that conversation becomes a realistic one, Manchester City's decision to commit to a five-year deal reflects a confidence in his long-term trajectory that the club intend to honour in full.
It is understood that a deal with Sheffield Wednesday will see Manchester City pay an initial £3 million guaranteed fee for Charles, while add-ons and future milestones could push the total transaction past £10 million.
