Manchester United's January thinking is beginning to take shape, with the club assessing the market for a striker after a more serious than expected injury to Benjamin Sesko. The immediate requirement is clear. United need cover, goals and reliability, and the indications are that attention is falling on experienced options rather than another major long-term investment.
According to Caught Offside, early checks have already been made on multiple forwards as United weigh the most practical route through the winter window. The report points to a growing sense that this will be a targeted search, driven by availability and affordability as much as pedigree.

Among the names under consideration, Ivan Toney appears to be one of the more credible. United have made enquiries over the Al Ahli forward, who continues to carry strong Premier League interest despite settling well in Saudi Arabia. There is a belief he would consider a return to England if the right proposal arrived, and that naturally keeps clubs attentive.
For United, the appeal is obvious. Toney offers proven finishing, physical presence and top-flight know-how, all qualities that would help a side trying to bridge a difficult period without overcommitting financially. The broader market context matters too. If a deal is to be done in January, it may need to be creative, and that suits a move centred on experience rather than a large fee for potential.
The report adds: "The priority for United is a proven goal-scorer who can fill in for Sesko while he's out injured," one source explained. "I don't expect a big investment for a young striker…more likely a loan or low-cost short-term deal."
United also checked on Dominic Calvert-Lewin, though that line now appears to have cooled significantly. Leeds United's striker had been on the radar ahead of the winter market, but talks over a new contract at Elland Road have changed the picture. As things stand, that route looks difficult and increasingly unlikely to develop into anything substantial.
That leaves United continuing their internal process, with a wider list understood to exist beyond the names already reported. This is consistent with how the club has been operating in recent windows, sounding out several possibilities before narrowing down to those considered both realistic and tactically useful.
The key point here is strategy. United are not thought to be pursuing an expensive rebuild of the forward line this month. The emphasis is on short-term reinforcement, a player capable of stepping in quickly and easing the burden while Sesko recovers. In that respect, the profile matters as much as the headline name.
There have been previous internal admirers of forwards such as Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ollie Watkins, and those names remain part of the wider recent picture around Old Trafford. Whether either becomes attainable this winter is another matter entirely. For now, the market feels fluid, with clubs reluctant to weaken themselves mid-season unless the terms are compelling.
One further layer to United's planning is that left-back has not disappeared from the agenda. Even so, striker is currently understood to be the more urgent priority. That is where the immediate problem lies, and that is where the decision-makers appear to be focusing most closely.
If this is where United are, then it makes complete sense to look at someone like Ivan Toney. There is no need to dress it up as a glamorous move. It would be about solving a problem quickly. United have lacked certainty in front of goal for too long, and the idea of bringing in a forward who knows the league and can handle pressure feels sensible.
The bigger question is whether the club can actually execute this sort of deal efficiently. That has often been the frustration. A clear need emerges, several names circulate, and then the window moves fast. If the plan is a short-term fix, it has to be decisive. Waiting around for the perfect option would be a mistake when the squad clearly needs help now.
Toney would bring personality as well as goals, and that edge can matter at Old Trafford. Calvert-Lewin always felt less convincing given his recent situation, while Mateta and Watkins sound far harder to prise away mid-season. So if the club is serious about experience and instant impact, Toney looks the standout from what has been reported.
There is also something telling in the mention of left-back still being in the background. It speaks to a squad that remains unfinished in several areas. Even so, getting the striker call right would change the mood quickly. When United have a focal point they trust, everything around the attack tends to look calmer, sharper and far more dangerous.
