Manchester United target Wesley as January plans take shape
Manchester United are moving towards a clear transfer priority for January, with defensive reinforcement now understood to be the main objective after a difficult opening to the 2026/27 campaign. According to TEAMtalk, the focus has sharpened around AS Roma wing-back Wesley, a player also admired by Arsenal, as INEOS weigh up whether mid-season business can address the squad's most glaring flaws.

The broad picture is not hard to read. United have won only two of their first ten matches in all competitions, and that return has heightened scrutiny on recruitment strategy as much as performances on the pitch. In recent windows, the club directed significant attention towards attacking and midfield additions, but the balance of the squad has remained open to question. Left-back, centre-back, wide areas and centre-forward have all been discussed externally, yet the strongest immediate need now appears to sit across the back line.

Wesley emerges in Manchester United transfer plans
Wesley has surfaced as a leading candidate as United examine the right side of defence and wing-back options. The 23-year-old's profile fits the kind of athletic, developing defender top clubs often track before making a firm move, and there is clearly a belief that he could add energy and long-term value. Arsenal's previous interest gives this story an extra layer, with United seemingly prepared to test the market for a player already on another Premier League shortlist.

There is, however, an important caveat. Roma are not thought to be keen sellers in January, which means any attempt to accelerate a deal may prove complicated. That leaves United in a familiar position, identifying a target early but needing to determine whether a winter push is realistic or whether patience until the summer is the likelier route. The mention of Giuliano Simeone in wider reporting underlines that forward options are being monitored too, but the stronger internal emphasis is on defence.
Our View
This is the sort of update that immediately grabs attention because it suggests there is finally some clarity. The frustration over the past year has been watching obvious gaps remain obvious. It has felt like the squad has been patched in one area while another has been left exposed, and that cycle always catches up with a team over a long season.
Wesley sounds like an intriguing target because the age profile and role make sense. A modern wide defender who can handle space, recover quickly and contribute going forward would improve the shape of this side straight away. The worry is familiar, though. If Roma do not want to sell in January, United cannot spend the whole month chasing a deal that never becomes realistic. That has happened too often in different forms.

The bigger point is that defence has to be the priority. That should not even be debated now. There has to be a proper plan for both full-back positions and centre-back depth, because too much of the season already feels fragile. If INEOS really have made that call, it is probably the most encouraging part of the whole report.
There is still a lot riding on execution. Identifying the right player is one thing, getting the deal done efficiently is another. United need less noise and more precision. If this window is handled well, it could stabilise the season. If it drifts, the same weaknesses will keep dragging the team down.
