Michael Carrick enjoyed one of his finest nights as a Manchester United player in the Champions League against Roma, scoring twice in a 7-1 win in the quarter-final, second leg in 2007. The re-run here was all about his managerial survival at the club.
The situation looked impossibly grim for him at half-time. Amid an atmosphere of continued fan anger towards the United ownership, Carrick's team had been implausibly bad. Roma took a 2-0 lead into the break and the truth was that the scoreline greatly flattered United.

What happened next was a fightback for the ages. For Carrick, it might even have topped 2007. United's defending had been so loose, so generous. But they finally showed the other side to their game – the one about attacking punch; derring-do. They found a solution to their woes at the back. Keep the ball in the other half.
Matheus Cunha was the hero and it said plenty about the chaos of this tie, the wildness of the emotions, that he ended up being sent off for a second yellow card in the 90th minute. His lunge at Leonardo Balerdi was the definition of a rush of blood.
Before that, Cunha had supplemented a Bruno Fernandes penalty – which the captain converted after a retake – with a touch and finish in the 83rd minute following an error from Balerdi. Then came the coup de grace.
It was a burst from Kobbie Mainoo, who was positive on his return to the starting XI after injury, and a fizzed pass from the substitute, Shea Lacey. Cunha took the ball with a lovely first touch before flashing a shot in off the inside of the near post. Cunha likes to celebrate his goals with a surfing move. This time, having torn off his shirt, it was a surf in the crowd, which led to his first booking.
The United support sing about having seen it all. This was just extraordinary. Can it save Carrick? It was the team's first win in 10 matches in all competitions so it was only a small step forward, even if it put United in a good position to qualify for the knockout rounds of the Champions League. In the heat of the moment, it felt like a giant one.
Carrick will go into Sunday's Premier League game at home against Aston Villa – another must-win – with renewed belief. It was easy to say that his players had fought for him. As much as that, after all of the criticism of them, they fought for themselves.
Carrick had cut a relaxed figure at the pre-match press conference on Monday. He had seen some good signs, he insisted. There had been bursts. A win was coming. Nobody saw it at half-time, only yet more evidence of the defensive disasters that have blighted the season.
With Luke Shaw still injured, Carrick was forced to persist with Diogo Dalot out of position at left-back. Dalot pushed high at the outset, which felt bold. His positioning was pure folly on the opening Roma goal.
The visitors transitioned quickly and when Rodrigo Mora looked up from the inside left, all he could see was Matías Soulé in acres of space on the opposite channel. Where was Dalot? Mora played the pass. Soulé took a touch and swept past the exposed Senne Lammens.
Paris Saint-Germainset a record as the quickest team to score four goals in the Champions League by powering into a 4-0 lead after 17 minutes against Villarrealon their way to a 6-0 win.
João Neves started the goal-blitz before Desiré Doué, Senny Mayulu and Fabián Ruiz quickly put the tie to bed. Ruiz struck his second to make it 5-0 soon after the interval and substitute David Boly completed the scoring as PSG extended their 100% Champions League start and moved three points clear at the top of the table.
Since taking just two points from their first three Ligue 1 games this season, which included a 2-1 home defeat to Monaco, PSG have now won 10 successive games in all competitions.
Interwere equally convincing, beating Feyenoord3-0 at De Kuip. Yann Bisseck curled in the opener from long range, Pio Esposito headed the second before half-time and Piotr Zielinski completed the scoring from distance after the restart.
Sporting Lisbonbeat Shakhtar Donetsk1-0, a day after parting ways with their head coach, Rui Borges. Under the reserve coach, Tiago Fernandes, the Portuguese giants picked up their third win in the Champions League this season, with Issa Doumbia scoring the decisive goal in the game at Stamford Bridge.
Aleksey Batrakov scored two goals in quick succession to seal a 2-0 win for Galatasarayagainst Stuttgart. Batrakov opened the scoring in the 12th minute at Rams Park and struck again three minutes later. Austria's Laskwon 4-0 against Slovan Bratislavaand Bodø/Glimtdrew 0-0 with Lille
Stadiums across Europe fell silent before kick-off in memory of the Tenerife player Jesús de Miguel, who died earlier on Tuesday after a collision on the pitch in the Spanish second division match against Andorra on Monday. Agencies
United's defending for the second goal was even worse. Leny Yoro turned and ran back towards his own goal as Roma advanced up the left and when the move appeared to have broken down for them around the United box, there was Harry Maguire to gift it back to Soulé with a dreadful miskick. He dropped his shoulder and shot; the ball hit Ayden Heaven's hand and Donyell Malen converted from the penalty spot. Again, Dalot had been high up the pitch.
The mutiny could be felt before kick-off. The green and gold balloons of protest against the Glazers blew around the stadium. The sounds of it were everywhere; the chants against the club's ownership a constant. When the clock showed 20 minutes and five seconds – or 2005; the year of the Glazer takeover – the Stretford End erupted in a planned move; hurling tennis balls down on to the pitch.
Moments earlier, a grisly Dalot error on the ball had almost led to Malen getting in for a third Roma goal and the first half was just an ordeal for United. Roma were well organised in their 3-4-2-1 shape and they got in up the right time and time again.
They might have had many more before the interval; Mora, Malen and Soulé all went close. United were so easy to play through. They were nervous on the ball. The lack of cohesion was glaring.
Carrick was in the last chance saloon during half-time. Maybe United had nowhere further to fall. They rebelled. Carrick lost Carlos Baleba in the 46th minute after the midfielder pulled his hamstring as he shaped to shoot in a promising position. Then United caught a break – two, actually – and the mood shifted sharply.
It was a soft penalty award for a push by Gianluca Mancini on Cunha after he played a give-and-go with Fernandes. But when United had that sinking feeling after Fernandes saw his kick saved by Devis Vásquez, they were reprieved when the referee, Jesús Gil Manzano, ordered a retake for encroachment. Fernandes lashed home.
Bryan Mbeumo, played through by Cunha for a one-on-one with Vásquez, saw his shot hit one post and then the other one before refusing to cross the line.
United threatened from corners. Maguire went close. Dalot had a header cleared off the line. It was Fernandes's cross for Cunha's equaliser. The winner was the prompt for bedlam.
