The Vancouver Canucks have enough problems without handing their opponents extra opportunities to score.
Yet here we are.
Vancouver entered the 2026-27 NHL season hoping new head coach Manny Malhotra would bring structure, accountability and a fresh identity. Instead, the Canucks have stumbled through an ugly opening stretch marked by defensive breakdowns, penalty-killing problems and losses piling up faster than excuses.
At some point, the conversation has to turn toward the man behind the bench.
Malhotra was hired to help establish a new culture in Vancouver. Right now, the results are raising an uncomfortable question: where is the discipline?
The numbers entering the recent stretch have been brutal.
Vancouver's penalty kill ranked near the bottom of the NHL, and its defensive coverage repeatedly broke down when opponents gained the man advantage. The Canucks struggled to close passing lanes, protect the slot and prevent dangerous cross-crease opportunities.
That is not a minor problem.
A weak penalty kill can sink an otherwise competitive team. Combine it with poor five-on-five defense and unreliable goaltending, and every minor penalty becomes an invitation for disaster.
The Canucks have experienced precisely that combination.
There is a difference between taking an occasional penalty while playing an aggressive game and repeatedly putting yourself in situations where one mistake becomes a goal against.
Vancouver needs to understand that difference quickly.
Malhotra arrived with legitimate coaching credentials. He led Abbotsford to the Calder Cup championship in 2025 and developed a reputation for player development and consistency.
That résumé earned him the opportunity to lead Vancouver through its rebuild.
But success in the AHL does not automatically translate into success in the NHL. The players are different, the pressure is greater, and opponents punish mistakes more consistently.
Malhotra inherited a difficult situation. Vancouver finished last in the league during the 2025-26 season, and the organization has undergone significant personnel changes.
Nobody should expect a rebuilding team to become a contender overnight.
But rebuilding does not mean abandoning basic defensive principles.
A young roster can make mistakes. It can struggle to finish scoring chances. It can lose games against more talented opponents.
What it cannot afford is a culture in which avoidable mistakes repeatedly go uncorrected.
If players keep taking unnecessary penalties, missing assignments and losing defensive structure, the coaching staff must find answers.
That is the job.
Vancouver supporters have legitimate reasons to be frustrated. The franchise has endured major changes, lost important personnel and entered another uncertain chapter.
Those circumstances deserve consideration.
So does the coaching staff's responsibility to make the best of them.
Malhotra does not need to turn this roster into a Stanley Cup contender tomorrow. He does need to demonstrate that the team is learning, improving and establishing a recognizable identity.
That means smarter decisions with the puck. Better positioning without it. Fewer unnecessary penalties. A penalty kill that can survive a difficult shift.
And when players repeatedly make the same mistakes, accountability must mean something beyond a stern postgame quote.
The coach cannot take every penalty himself. He cannot make every save. He cannot prevent every defensive breakdown.
But he can establish expectations, adjust personnel and demand better execution.
If the same problems continue, questions about his system and coaching decisions are entirely reasonable.
The Canucks are not going to solve every problem with one lineup change or one motivational speech.
They need consistent improvement across the roster, especially defensively. They need their special teams to stop undermining their chances. They need a coaching staff that can turn a difficult season into meaningful development.
And they need to stop making life harder for themselves.
Malhotra deserves time to implement his system, particularly with a rebuilding roster. It would be premature to declare his tenure a failure after a difficult opening stretch.
But patience is not the same as immunity from criticism.
The Canucks hired Malhotra because they believed he could establish accountability and build a better team. Those expectations should remain in place when the results turn ugly.
Vancouver does not need perfection. It needs progress.
Right now, the defensive mistakes and penalty-killing struggles are making that progress difficult to see.
Manny Malhotra has a major coaching challenge on his hands. If the Canucks want to become a serious team again, discipline has to become a priority — not an occasional talking point.
The rebuild can take time. The excuses should not.
