After landing the first overall selection in the 2026 NHL Draft, the Toronto Maple Leafs selected Gavin McKenna, a forward out of Penn State University who was widely regarded as this year's consensus first pick.
Additionally, Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka has been busy adding new players to the club, including defenseman Darren Raddysh , forward Jack Roslovic , and more recently, goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky . But both players have worn jersey No. 72, something that rookie McKenna said he's more than happy to acquiesce to the veteran of 806 career games.
"Bob, he's won two Stanley Cups. If he wants that number, he's going to get that number," McKenna said via BarDown on X.
When asked if he had a backup number in mind, McKenna answered that they're already out of circulation for the Maple Leafs.
"My two other ones are taken, they're up in the rafters," he said, talking about No. 27 and No. 9. So, I'll have to think about it."
No. 27 is retired in honor of Darryl Sittler and Frank Mahovlich, while No. 9 is retired in honor of Charlie Conacher and Ted Kennedy.
Bobrovsky arrives in Toronto after having spent the last seven seasons with the divisional rival Florida Panthers , where he won a pair of Stanley Cup rings. Additionally, he and the Panthers defeated the Maple Leafs twice in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Maple Leafs will be moving forward with the tandem of Bobrovsky and Anthony Stolarz , the same tandem the club won the Stanley Cup with in 2024; Stolarz then departed via free agency to Toronto, and Bobrovsky has now done the same.
