The Toronto Maple Leafs agreed to a one-year, two-way contract with center Ryan Tverberg Saturday worth the league-minimum NHL salary of $850,000, per PuckPedia. The 24-year-old restricted free agent was coming off his three-year entry-level contract and received the expected $850,000 qualifying offer value while securing improved American Hockey League compensation.
Under the new agreement, Tverberg will earn $250,000 in the AHL with a guaranteed salary of $350,000. The contract carries an $850,000 cap hit and does not include signing bonuses, performance bonuses, or any no-trade or no-move protection. Unless he becomes a full-time NHL player next season, he is projected to become a Group VI unrestricted free agent when the deal expires.
Originally selected by Toronto in the seventh round of the 2020 NHL Draft, Tverberg developed through the University of Connecticut before signing his entry-level contract in 2023. He has spent nearly all of the past three seasons with the AHL's Toronto Marlies and is coming off the best campaign of his professional career.
During the 2025-26 regular season, Tverberg finished with career highs of 15 goals, 21 assists, and 36 points in 63 games. He also played a major role in the Marlies' Calder Cup championship, recording six goals and eight assists for 14 points across 24 playoff games.
His stellar AHL performance earned him his first NHL opportunity late in the regular season. Tverberg appeared in two games for the Maple Leafs, going scoreless while posting a plus-one rating and collecting two penalty minutes.
The 5-foot-11, 187-pound forward has experienced fluctuations in production during his AHL career. After amassing 32 points (nine goals, 23 assists) in 46 games as a rookie in 2023-24, he was limited to 11 points in 46 games the following season before rebounding with his career-best offensive totals during the Marlies' championship run. That sophomore campaign was also impacted by multiple injuries.
Tverberg is expected to begin the 2026-27 season with the Marlies but enters training camp as a candidate to compete for NHL opportunities. He is viewed as one of Toronto's top recall options if injuries create openings on the NHL roster.
With Tverberg's signing, the Maple Leafs now have 45 contracts on the books, while he becomes the team's second restricted free agent to sign after defenseman Emil Andrae . Toronto is now left with Jacob Quillan and William Villeneuve as the remaining qualifying-offer RFAs awaiting new contracts.
