Marco Wilson is entering an important stage of his NFL career with the Miami Dolphins . The 27-year-old cornerback returned to South Florida this offseason after spending the first part of his career with the Arizona Cardinals , followed by stops with the New England Patriots and Cincinnati Bengals .
Wilson began his NFL career with significant promise. Arizona selected him in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, and he immediately became a starter. He opened 13 games as a rookie and followed that with three interceptions in 2022 while opposing quarterbacks posted a 77.1 passer rating when targeting him.
His career trajectory changed in 2023 when he struggled in Arizona's new defensive scheme and was eventually released. Since then, Wilson has not started an NFL game in 21 appearances. Now, back with his hometown Dolphins, he is competing for a role in a crowded secondary and trying to establish himself again.

Wilson has offered a deeply personal explanation for why his NFL career fell apart after such a promising beginning, describing the past few seasons as "hell" and saying he ultimately had to look at himself for the reasons behind his struggles.
"A lot of people don't really understand what has gone on mentally, what has gone on privately in my life," Wilson told reporters, according to Barry Jackson of "Miami Herald". "I've had to really work hard to master the mind, gain more maturity, stop pointing the finger when things went wrong and taking accountability and make myself a better man and better player."
Marco Wilson was particularly candid about how he handled the early success of his career. He said he had taken the opportunities he received after entering the league for granted and allowed himself to become distracted by things outside football.
"In the past, I took the blessings that God gave me as far as coming into this league and being a starter right away, I took that for granted," Wilson said.
He added that his decisions away from football contributed to losing some of the opportunities he had received.
Marco Wilson said his focus in recent months has been on getting his life, heart and mind in a better place. Before signing with Miami, he prayed for "peace and stability," something he believes he has found by returning home.
According to David Furones of the "Sun Sentinel," Wilson said, "As I went into my free agency, I was a bit worried." "The main things I prayed for was peace and stability. And clearly God answered those prayers, brought me back home."
The Dolphins offer Wilson an opportunity to rebuild his career, but there is no guarantee he will secure a major role.
Miami has several players competing for playing time at cornerback, including first-round pick Chris Johnson, Jason Marshall Jr. , JuJu Brents , Ethan Bonner , A.J. Green III, and Alex Austin .
Storm Duck and Darrell Baker Jr. are also expected to enter the competition once they return from the physically unable to perform list.
Marco Wilson has already made an impression in the preseason. In Miami's opener against the Washington Commanders , he intercepted a pass from Sam Hartman after the quarterback sent a deep throw downfield.
"It was awesome," Wilson said. "It felt like one of the biggest blessings from God, just a nice start with the hometown team."
Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley was also pleased with the play, saying Wilson had enjoyed a good training camp and that the interception was a significant moment.
Marco Wilson now has another opportunity to strengthen his case as Miami prepares to face the New York Giants .
For a player who once started 37 games in his first three NFL seasons, the current competition represents a different position in his career.
But returning to South Florida has given Wilson a chance to be around his parents and family again. He said that support has helped him avoid the feeling of isolation he experienced with other teams.
"I'm back home, around family, got a lot of love around me," Wilson said. "I'm going to make the most of this opportunity."
