On Tuesday, Memphis quarterback Marcus Stokes was named the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback of the Week. Stokes won the award a day after he was named to the Davey O'Brien Great 8 list.
Stokes was named to the Week 9 Great 8 list alongside Air Force's Kemper Hodges, North Texas' Tayven Jackson, Baylor's DJ Lagway, Delaware's Nick Minicucci, Oregon's Dylan Raiola, Iowa State's Jaylen Raynor and South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers.
It's the third time Stokes has been named to the Great 8 list, and it's the first time he's been on the list in back-to-back weeks. It's the first time he was named the Quarterback of the Week, and it's the first time a quarterback from the American Conference or any Group of Six conference has won the award this year.
The quarterback threw for 371 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions, and he completed 82.9 percent of his throws. He added 30 yards and a rushing touchdown with his legs, and it's the second game that he hasn't recorded a turnover since the five turnover showing against Tulane.
He has thrown for more than 300 yards five times this season, and he became the first quarterback in Memphis recorded history that has accounted for five touchdowns in back-to-back games.
Unlike the previous three games, Stokes and the offense hit the ground running against the Black Knights, and the Tigers scored on four of their five first half possessions. The only possession the didn't end in points was the drive where Jemyri Davis fumbled the ball after a reception.
He has now thrown for 2,532 yards, 25 touchdowns and six interceptions this year, and he ranks No. 5 in passing yards and tied for No. 1 in passing yards.
Stokes had his worst game as a Tiger last month when he turned the ball over five times against Tulane, but he's done a great job at bouncing back from that performance.
Over the last two games, Stokes has thrown for 691 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions, and he's rushed for 61 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries.
The quarterback has put together a fantastic season for the Tigers, and it will be interesting to see what he can do during the last three games of the regular season. Memphis is off this week and will play two straight games on the road before ending the season on black Friday against Temple.
