FOXBOROUGH – The Patriots had several issues last year.
They had a young, inexperienced head coach whose message didn’t always resonate with his players or staff. The team’s roster also lacked experience and sufficient talent to compensate for the issues the inexperienced coaching staff brought with them.
Once the Jerod Mayo chapter swiftly ended, the Mike Vrabel era started, and things almost immediately changed in New England . An experienced head coach with a clear vision on the type of player he wanted, Vrabel and the Patriots front office assembled a free-agent class that helped change the culture inside Gillette Stadium almost immediately.
That new culture, combined with a clear and concise message from Vrabel, led Patriots players to instantly buy in this offseason. That, players say, is one of the main reasons why this team is 11-2 and coming off its tenth-straight win after beating the New York Giants on Monday night.
For some, they said the change under Vrabel happened immediately.
“I definitely noticed the identity shift and the culture change, the moment Vrabes stepped in,” Vederian Lowe said. “He came in and immediately demanded that we follow the team identity, and he promised that would give us a chance. We all bought it, and here we are.”
“I felt like we set a standard for ourselves (at OTAs),” Rhamondre Stevenson added. “I won’t get into exactly what that was, but I feel like we all bought into it and still stay on it.”
Vrabel’s team identity isn’t a secret. It’s plastered on the team meeting room , which is also the post-game press conference auditorium. The four core principles are:
-
No. 1: Effort and finish
-
No. 2: Ball Security & ball disruption
-
No. 3: Details, techniques and fundamentals
-
No. 4: Make great decisions
On Monday, the Patriots won their tenth-straight game. That’s happened three times in franchise history, and it’s the longest winning streak in a single season since 2015. With 11 wins, this marks the best season in New England since 2019.
For the Patriots, their success this season goes beyond what’s written on a nautical blue sign. This team has a level of buy-in and camaraderie that players say is rare in today’s NFL.
Multiple players have said this is one of the closest teams they’ve been on.
“It’s definitely unique. You don’t come across this in locker rooms,” edge rusher K’Lavon Chaisson said. “I think the closeness obviously comes with winning, too, for sure. It draws everyone closer and closer. You want to watch highlights of the team. You want to talk about (different) plays throughout the game.
“It’s been pretty dope. It’s going to continue to build and get stronger. I’m a firm believer in this. The closer we get and the more we believe in our capabilities, the better things are going to be.”
Vrabel was intentional with the type of player he brought to New England in his first season.
This offseason, the Patriots signed multiple veterans who were previously captains ( Robert Spillane , Stefon Diggs , etc.). They brought in veterans who have had experience in and enjoy mentoring younger players ( Garrett Bradbury , Morgan Moses , Mack Hollins , Joshua Dobbs , Diggs, etc.)
The closeness of the group has created an environment where players root for one another and hold each other accountable.
“It’s the camaraderie, guys really pulling for each other. It’s not fake out there,” Diggs said. “You want guys to play well, you want the guys around you to play well, throwing those extra blocks and doing all that. I think it goes a long way… We all hold each other accountable, and it’s like we built that standard. I think that’s the biggest thing.”
On Monday, the Patriots received contributions from all three phases in their win over the Giants. They weren’t perfect, but that’s not what this season has been about. The Patriots are a sound football team that’s well coached.
It’s clear there are plenty of teams in the NFL who are not.
Patriots players believe in their coach and the staff he assembled. They certainly believe in their quarterback, Drake Maye . The combination of coaching, quarterbacking, and buy-in has this Patriots team sitting at the top of the AFC and looking like legit contenders.
“I think a lot of it is how we play the game. We play together,” Bradbury said. “I feel like we play with a certain identity that coach Vrabel wants to see. You saw that identity (Monday).”
“We all just believe in who we are and what we’re capable of,” added Chaisson. “I think that’s the most special part about it. We worked our ass off to get here. We don’t think anything is luck or a coincidence. It’s pure hard work and belief.”
