- Mark Pope is giving the BBN exactly what they wanted
Since taking the helm of the Kentucky Basketball program, Mark Pope has largely been seen as a deeply analytical, measured head coach.
The former med school student talks about controlling what you can control and letting go of the rest.

While few question his on-court coaching, one of Big Blue Nation's biggest criticisms was that he could sometimes seem a little too calculated on the sidelines. Fans wanted to see raw emotion. They wanted fire.
Pope appears to have taken that feedback and ran with it.
The transformation began during the offseason. Pope arrived at summer workouts with a rugged beard, and he later went viral with a swagger-filled video set to the 50 Cent track "Many Men."
Almost instantly, the Kentucky fanbase embraced this new attitude and affectionately labeled it the "Dark Pope" era.
If anyone thought the offseason persona was just for social media, Tuesday night's season-opening victory over Manhattan proved otherwise.

Late in the game, despite the Wildcats' commanding 31-point lead, Pope erupted on the sideline. Dissatisfied with a lapse in execution, he was seen visibly berating his team during a timeout. Just prior to that, he had snapped a whiteboard over his knee.
It was exactly the kind of relentless standard and fiery passion fans have been begging to see.
However, Pope knows he has to manage these explosive moments strategically.
Addressing his sideline demeanor last season, he explained that he has to be careful when he goes white-hot. If a coach operates at a level 10 all the time, the players become numb to it, and the emotion completely loses its meaning.

By saving that level of intensity for moments when the team's standard drops, even in a blowout, Pope sends a clear message to his locker room. The fans who wanted a more fiery leader have officially gotten their wish, and the Dark Pope era seems to be here to stay.
