- Markus Burton Looks Like The Perfect Point Guard For Indiana Basketball

Sometimes, the perfect fit is obvious from the beginning. For Indiana basketball, Markus Burton certainly looks like that guy.
The Notre Dame transfer made quite the first impression in Indiana's season-opening win over Eastern Illinois on Monday night, finishing with 19 points, five assists, two rebounds and two steals in just 24 minutes. Burton connected on seven of his eight field goal attempts, went a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc and committed just one turnover.
It was exactly the kind of performance Indiana head coach Darian DeVries envisioned when bringing the talented point guard to Bloomington.
Burton's ability to score has never been in question. During his three seasons at Notre Dame, the 6-0, 190-pound guard averaged 19.1 points, 3.8 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.8 steals across 69 career games. He was named ACC Rookie of the Year in 2023-24 and earned All-ACC recognition during his time with the Fighting Irish.
But what makes Burton such an intriguing addition isn't simply his scoring ability. It's how he gets those points and what his presence can do for everyone around him.
Burton is an explosive, dynamic guard who excels at creating his own offense. He's particularly dangerous off the dribble, where his ability to change speeds, navigate ball screens and attack the paint makes him difficult to defend. His mid-range game is another major weapon, and his ability to finish with floaters helps compensate for his lack of size.
Those qualities give Indiana something every successful offense needs: a point guard who can manufacture offense when possessions break down.
And while Burton is certainly capable of taking over games as a scorer, his five assists against Eastern Illinois showed that he's equally comfortable creating opportunities for his teammates.
There's also something fitting about Burton returning home. The Mishawaka, Indiana, native starred at Penn High School, where he earned Indiana Mr. Basketball honors in 2023. Now, after three seasons at Notre Dame, he's getting an opportunity to lead his home state's most recognizable basketball program. During Big Ten Media Days, Burton referred to himself as an Indiana Kid multiple times and you could tell he was excited to be a Hoosier.
There are still questions, particularly surrounding his size, defensive matchups against bigger Big Ten guards and whether his perimeter shooting can remain consistent. His injury-shortened final season at Notre Dame also makes durability worth monitoring.
Still, Burton's opening performance was about as encouraging as Indiana could have hoped.
He's experienced, explosive, capable of taking over offensively and comfortable running the show. More importantly, he appears to possess the exact skill set needed to elevate the players around him.
It's only one game, but Indiana may have found the perfect guy to run its offense.
