The Fish have a wealth of talent at shortstop and that gives them plenty of options
One of the benefits of the incredible amount of talent that the Miami Marlins have stacked in their system comes with more positive benefits than some might even realize. That includes on particular infield position that is populated by promising prospects and intriguing athletes.

At the Major League level, every baseball fan knows about Otto Lopez , who finished third in NL with a .305 average, finishing just behind the Philadelphia Philles' Luis Arraez (.310), and the eventual champion, Gabriel Moreno (.311), in 2026. But he's also been the subject of trade rumors recently.
So, Lopez might be moving on from Miami sooner rather than later, despite his star status and popularity among the fan base. Perhaps not, but fueling some of the discussion is the very valid point that the organization likely has his successor waiting in the wings already.
President of baseball operations Peter Bendix has invested two first-round selections at the spot, drafting the (now) 22-year-old Aiva Arquette (2025, 7th overall) and 19-year-old Jacob Lombard (2026, 14th). But even they might not be the long-term answer; the Fish have even more outstanding infielders behind them.
Arquette might be the most intriguing option of the bunch. At 6'5" and 220 lbs, he offers the kind of power potential that could transform Miami's lineup. His ability to drive the ball, arm strength, and athleticism give him a chance to remain at shortstop. However, his size could eventually make third base a more natural fit.

Lombard enters the picture as a compelling local talent featuring a dynamic blend of athletic ability, power, speed, and refined instincts. While he requires time to mature and develop before reaching The Show, the teen sensation has time on his side, and the Marlins can allow his growth to unfold naturally.
Marlins Have Even More Options
Starlyn Caba offers another strong option. Obtained from Philly as part of the Jesús Luzardo transaction, Caba has established himself as an elite defensive shortstop. Consequently, he could solidify an everyday role without depending on elite offensive production.
The system's depth extends beyond them. 17-year-old Santiago Solarte stands out as an intriguing international prospect with notable power potential, alongside additional depth pieces like Luis Arana and Andrew Salas. Miami boasts an impressive group of shortstops, though a number of these young players may eventually shift to other positions as they progress.

This surplus of shortstops makes a potential trade involving Lopez more realistic, particularly if it helps fill another roster hole. Nevertheless, parting with an established major-league hitter solely due to prospective talent would be premature, as none of the young infielders have yet proven capable of matching Lopez's output.
In summary, Lombard projects to have the highest ultimate ceiling at shortstop, whereas Arquette brings potential as a high-impact bat at shortstop or third base. Caba remains a defensive game-changer with room to exceed expectations, and Solarte provides a promising long-term developmental option.
Fortunately for the Marlins, an immediate decision is unnecessary. If one player establishes himself as the primary shortstop, others can be converted into trade assets or moved across the infield. This degree of organizational depth is precisely what enables a rebuilding franchise to transform into a persistent contender.
