The Fish aren't that far away from a playoff berth in 2027
The Miami Marlins finished the 2026 season at 80-82, third in the National League East. But the final record may not tell the entire story of a team that spent much of the season deciding just how close it was to becoming a legitimate contender.

The Fish certainly had their ups-and-downs and a lot of growing pains throughout the year. Plagued by injuries and inconsistency, multiple maladies on the pitching staff resembled ensured that the Injured List looked by M*A*S*H* unit by season's end.
In spite of all their streakiness and setbacks, the Fish were still hanging around the race and had a chance to make a run, Marlins team president of baseball operations Peter Bendix decided to stay the course. Instead of going all-in for veteran Fall rentals, he focused his moves on building the farm system.
Miami ultimately chose development over a late push, trading two important contributors at the deadline in outfielder Liam Hicks and pitcher Lake Bachar. The Marlins sacrificed some immediate production, but the organization believed the returns would strengthen a roster that could be ready to take the next step in 2027.
"Wait 'Til Next Year"
Perhaps the biggest reason for optimism is the starting rotation, where three right-handers have held down the five-man unit in 2026, but they should be getting more help on the way in the minors that could jump right into the waters with them.

Sandy Alcantara once again proved to be a workhorse, leading the majors with 214 innings. He even recorded three saves and looked almost as dominant as he did during his Cy Young Award-winning season in 2022. Eury Pérez, meanwhile, finished the season looking increasingly like the front-line ace Miami envisioned when it acquired him.
The X-factor in 2027 will be righty Max Meyer , who began the year 9-1 and was arguably the Marlins' best starter before a neck injury ended his season on July 18. Meyer posted a 2.68 ERA in 20 starts and is expected to be at full strength by Spring Training. How he builds on this season's early success will be a big factor for the South Florida Nine if they are going to make the playoffs next season.
The talent pipeline will continue, with left-handers Thomas White and Robby Snelling remaining two of the organization's most intriguing pitching prospects. Both youngsters were battling back from injuries, but will be given extended auditions in Spring, with the hopes that one (or both) will crack the five-man rotation.
Adding to that, an emerging lineup featuring young stars like infielder Otto Lopez, catcher Joe Mack, and outfielder-designated hitter Heriberto Hernandez will only get better. None of those players mentioned are over the age of 26, and most of their teammates aren't either. Along the way, a talented prospect like infielder Aiva Arquette could make an impact. If multiple prospects make their way to Miami and succeed in 2027, the team could go from Wild Card hopefuls to a potential threat to conquer the Atlanta Braves and Philadephia Phillies in the National League East Division
For the Marlins, 2026 may ultimately be remembered less for an 80-82 record than for the foundation it helped establish for what comes next. And for fans of the Fish, that's worth waiting for.
