Martin Terrier 's Bundesliga adventure could be coming to an early end.
According to Foot Mercato , the Bayer Leverkusen attacker is open to returning to Ligue 1 just two years after leaving Rennes , with his former club pushing to bring him back. At the same time, Olympique de Marseille have also identified the Frenchman as a potential attacking reinforcement.
Terrier arrived at Leverkusen in the summer of 2024 in a €20 million move after establishing himself as one of Ligue 1's most consistent forwards. However, injuries have prevented him from ever finding real momentum in Germany.
The 29-year-old has scored seven goals and provided three assists in 44 appearances for Bayer, but those numbers only tell part of the story. Since arriving at the BayArena, Terrier has suffered an Achilles tendon rupture and, more recently, a hamstring injury, missing close to 300 days of action across two seasons.
Now, with Bayer entering a new era under Carles Martínez Novell, Terrier's future appears increasingly uncertain.
Leverkusen are reshaping their squad ahead of the new campaign, and while the Frenchman remains under contract until 2029, a return to France could suit all parties.
Rennes are leading the race.
The Breton club are once again exploring a reunion with a player who enjoyed the best years of his career at Roazhon Park. Between 2020 and 2024, Terrier became one of the club's most decisive attacking players, scoring 51 goals and registering 24 assists in 141 appearances.
For the player, the appeal is obvious. Rennes is where he reached his peak, and a familiar environment could provide the ideal platform to rebuild after two frustrating seasons interrupted by injury.
Marseille are also monitoring the situation.
The Ligue 1 side have yet to make a formal move, but Terrier's name has surfaced during internal recruitment discussions. One major factor is Bruno Genesio, who coached Terrier during his most productive spell at Rennes and remains a strong admirer of the versatile forward.
Whether Leverkusen are prepared to negotiate remains to be seen. The club invested significantly in Terrier and know the quality he can bring when fully fit. At the same time, the summer transfer window offers an opportunity to reshape the squad, and a player seeking regular football could become available under the right conditions.
After two difficult years in Germany, Martin Terrier now faces a pivotal decision. Stay and fight for his place at Bayer Leverkusen, or return to the league where he became one of France's most feared attackers.
As things stand, the road back to Ligue 1 is becoming increasingly realistic.
