Maryland football sustained a costly loss before facing Hampton with edge rusher Zahir Mathis out . But head coach Mike Locksley watched DeJuan Williams ease those concerns. Through an epic 94-yard touchdown in the 2026 season opener.
The running back lined up by himself in the backfield. Maryland showed 12 personnel to the right side of the line. Williams exploded right up that way, scampering for 94 yards to score the opening touchdown.
Lockley watched the offense open up from there while facing the HBCU program. Maryland rolled to an early 27-0 lead in this non-conference showdown.
The Terrapins walked into their home venue facing a make-or-break campaign with their coach. Locksley annually shows his prowess on the College Football Recruiting trail, including landing the past five-star Mathis. But the on-field results have become subpar. The Terps have endured back-to-back 4-8 seasons entering the 2026 campaign.
Locksley hasn't won more than eight games in a season since taking over as head coach in 2019. He also has taken Maryland to just three bowl appearance, although he owns a 3-0 record in postseason play. So Locksley sits on a intensifying hot seat for this season.
But his team jumped off to a fast start against a heavy underdog. Plus Maryland has played nothing like its Big Ten rival Rutgers, which took a massive beatdown to UMass on Thursday to start its season. Maryland clearly didn't want to look anything like the Scarlet Knights in that letdown loss.
Maryland took a 27-point lead deep into the second quarter before halftime hit.
