The Los Angeles Rams shocked everyone by drafting Ty Simpson . Los Angeles chose to invest in their future instead of making a win-now selection. The structure of Matthew Stafford 's contract extension makes that look like a pretty smart move after all.
Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated broke down the veteran quarterback's new contract in a recent article. He explained how Stafford's contract gives sets LA up for an easy transition to Ty Simpson .
Stafford's contract is unique because it features a "dummy year" and void years far into the future.
"In 2027, he has a $10 million base salary, and a series of four $8.75 million roster bonuses, adding up to $35 million, which add void years (2035-38) to the contract and are paid out like base salary is," Breer wrote. "All of that becomes fully guaranteed on the third day of the 2027 league year, as does a $5 million roster bonus that's due on the fifth day of the 2028 league year, which is essentially part of Stafford's 2027 money."
All of this suggests that Stafford has, at maximum, two years left in LA following the 2026 season.
"So Stafford will either make $45 million for next year, plus up to $5 million in incentives, and retire; or $110 million over the next two years, plus up to $10 million incentives," Breer added. "That, of course, gives the Rams some runway with Stafford before they turn to Ty Simpson ."
Meanwhile, Simpson's rookie contract goes through the end of the 2029 season. That can be extended by one year if the Rams pick up his fifth-year option.
The Rams seemingly have their quarterback plan for the future figured out into the early 2030s. If LA keeps the rest of the roster well stocked, they should be in great shape for years to come.
Now the question becomes when will the Stafford era end and the Simpson era begin?
