The Dallas Mavericks are making a big change after missing the playoffs in Cooper Flagg 's rookie season in 2025-26. Dallas and head coach Jason Kidd have mutually agreed to part ways , the team announced on social media Tuesday.
"The Dallas Mavericks announced today that the team has mutually agreed to part ways with head coach Jason Kidd ," the team wrote. "The organization will immediately begin a comprehensive search for its next head coach."
Kidd was the head coach in Dallas for five seasons, amassing a 205-205 record in that time. He was a very successful coach in the postseason, reaching the Western Conference Finals in 2022 and the NBA Finals in 2024.
The Mavs recently hired well-respected exec Masai Ujiri to man the front office heading into this new era of the roster, and it's clear that the 2019 NBA Champion with the Toronto Raptors is looking for a fresh start.
Unfortunately for Kidd and the organization, things had started to go downhill ever since the Mavs traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in February of 2025. The Mavs flamed out that spring, losing in the play-in tournament, before a poor showing in 2025-2026 that saw them miss the playoffs after trading Anthony Davis to the Washington Wizards .
Even coming off of a season that had the Mavs in the lottery, this will be a very attractive job for coaching candidates around the league. Reigning Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg really came on late in the year and looks like a surefire superstar in the future. As a rookie, Flagg averaged 21 points and 6.7 rebounds per game and should only be getting better heading into year two.
The Mavs also have the No. 9 overall pick in a draft class that is absolutely loaded, so they will be able to add another standout young prospect to the roster. Kyrie Irving will be returning in 2026-27, which should allow whoever is hired as the new head coach bring this team back to playoff contention right away in year one.
