Two-way contracts are supposed to be low-stakes arrangements. A team signs a fringe player, stashes him in the G League and calls him up when injuries demand it, without ever building a rotation around him. Walter Clayton Jr. is complicating that math for Dallas.
The guard scored 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting in Monday's 113-109 win at Miami, adding four rebounds, four assists and a block in 17 minutes while finishing a plus-24. He hit both of his 3-point attempts, got into the lane for floaters and made quick reads whenever the Heat collapsed toward Cooper Flagg.

And what's his mindset regarding his role here?
"Stay ready. Just trying to stay engaged during the timeouts, know the game plan," Clayton said. "And then just a big factor, just the guys trusting me to go out there and shoot the ball and play my game.''

The run came after Sergio de Larrea left in the second quarter with a right knee strain. He fell forward while trying to corral an inbound pass after marginal contact with Tim Hardaway Jr. De Larrea limped to the bench and was escorted to the locker room by head athletic trainer Jana Austin before being ruled out at halftime.

Marcus Sasser was the expected beneficiary of those minutes, but Dusty May went to Clayton instead and was rewarded for the decision.
What Clayton has produced since makes the move look obvious in hindsight. Over his last two games, he has nine assists on two turnovers, a ratio that suggests he can run a second unit rather than just fill minutes.
Clayton went 18th overall in 2025 after leading Florida to a national championship and earning NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors.
Things went sideways from there. Utah moved on from him to acquire Jaren Jackson Jr.; Memphis cut him before the season started and Dallas picked him up on a two-way deal on the day of the season opener. That is where a former first-round pick ends up when two organizations decide he is not worth a standard roster spot.

Now the Mavericks have to consider whether he is worth one of theirs.
The roster restrictions are real because two-way players face limits on how many NBA games they can appear in. Dallas cannot burn through those opportunities on a guard it might need in February. That means the team either converts him at some point or risks having him unavailable at the worst possible moment.
Making that move requires a standard roster spot and Dallas currently carries 15 players on standard contracts. Creating one would mean waiving someone, which is not a decision a front office usually makes four games into a season.

The injury situation might force the issue anyway. De Larrea's timeline is unclear after Monday, Naji Marshall missed the game with an illness, and Kyrie Irving is on a minutes restriction as he works back from a torn ACL that will keep him out on certain nights.
The Mavericks host Oklahoma City on Wednesday, and Clayton could again find himself in the rotation depending on the results of De Larrea's tests. Another performance like Monday's would make the conversation about his contract harder to ignore because he has already outplayed the terms of the deal he signed.
