The Yankees got quality, but only 20 starts

Fried finished 2026 with a 2.80 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 104 strikeouts against 33 walks in 112 2/3 innings. Those aren't the numbers of a pitcher whose ability needs rescuing.

He also made 20 starts. The Yankees needed other pitchers to cover the rest of the schedule, and a reassuring October examination can't guarantee how much work any starter will handle next year. The quality and the workload belong in the same evaluation.

Depth doesn't require a headline signing

I'd want New York to add a pitcher it would be comfortable actually starting, rather than count a collection of emergency options as a finished depth plan. That could come through a modest acquisition or a legitimate internal competition. It doesn't have to be an expensive name or a trade that creates a different weakness.

The practical goal is a sixth starter with a believable path to useful innings. Such a pitcher could cover an absence, make it easier to manage workloads or prevent the club from rushing another arm simply because the schedule needs someone that night.

There is a sensible case for spending most of the available resources on hitting and trusting younger pitchers to supply the extra starts. That approach becomes more attractive if the internal options show enough to deserve it. I wouldn't rule it out before seeing the actual cost of an addition.

What I wouldn't accept is substituting good health news for that evaluation. We don't have the medical records, and this isn't a prediction that Fried will get hurt again. His 2026 performance supports counting on his talent; his 20-start workload supports preparing for the possibility that the club needs more innings elsewhere.

An improved offense and a properly stocked rotation are compatible winter goals. Fried shouldn't have to make every scheduled turn for both plans to work.
