- McShay: QB Target Could Be Gone By Time Steelers Make Draft Pick
The quarterback class for the 2026 NFL Draft is much thinner than predicted, which is bad news for the Pittsburgh Steelers . Draft analyst Todd McShay is starting to hear whispers that one of Mike McCarthy's possible targets — Alabama passer Ty Simpson — won't be around long enough to end up in the Steel City.
"I'm a big Ty Simpson fan, despite the 6-1, the injuries and the 15 starts," McShay said Monday on "Up & Adams." "But I'm already starting to hear people like, 'Could he go as high as Cleveland , sitting there at six?' And I hope for Ty Simpson he does not become a Cleveland Brown. They don't have the protection, they don't have the weapons. I'd love to see him with the Rams. They pick at 13 in the first of their two picks.
"But it's fascinating to see a guy who has gastritis, got beat up all year long, his No. 1 wide receiver disappeared in Ryan Williams, they had like the 126th-best rushing attack at Alabama … and it all fell apart at the end of the year."
The Steelers met with Simpson at the NFL Scouting Combine last week. Unlike Mendoza, Simpson showed off his arm in workouts at Lucas Oil Stadium. McShay thinks signal-caller-needy teams have begun to take notice.
"I think he's different, and I think there's some teams out there that are just trying to be really quiet about it," McShay said. "Because everyone's talking about (Fernando) Mendoza and then the rest of the quarterbacks suck. It's just not the deal. And Ty Simpson is going to go somewhere in the first, and it won't shock me if it's in the top-15."
