As summer faded to fall, most of those that pay attention the MEAC had one team and one team only circled as the favorite to get to Atlanta and hoist the Celebration Bowl trophy at season's end. The one that did it last year. South Carolina State, rightfully, garnered most of the preseason attention as not only the best team in their conference but in HBCU football on the whole. Chennis Berry is a heck of a coach and his group has been the standard for several years now.
Fast forward two months, however, and it is not Berry's Bulldogs that are taking up those same headlines. Instead Morgan State has found itself in that particular spot seven weeks into the 2026 season, much to the surprise of many around FCS football. The Bears, currently holders of a 5-1 overall record, are suddenly vaulted into those same conversations. Exciting come-from-behind wins, a feisty offense that refuses to say die and genuine belief that they are the best team on the field in every game they play; those are the traits of these MSU Bears. And it is their senior quarterback, the one who has willed them to victory after victory, that is the center of it all.
Last week Cameron Edge… or Cam as he likes to be known… calmly walked into the huddle against Robert Morris. There was under five minutes to play and his Bears had just fallen behind by six to the Colonials at home in front of a homecoming crowd of over 11,000. As collected as could be, he proceeded to command an 11-play, 75-yard march that wound up in the end zone with just 22 seconds remaining. Edge completed three passes on that drive before eventually handing the ball off to Keith Jenkins Jr. who did the rest; a final four minutes of a game that so perfectly sums up who he and this Bears team is.
There hasn't been a pressure that's been to great for Edge and maybe that's because he's taken the long road to get to where he is right now. He's a story that, at least at its start, is very common in today's brand of college football. A highly touted recruit that bounced around in the FBS before finding his home… and his niche… at an FCS program that needed his abilities. Edge, though, is not one of the many transfers that has gotten lost into the endless void of the transfer portal and buried behind a mountain of other players and it's paying dividends for both him and his team.
Edge, a native of Clayton, Delaware, began his college career at Maryland as a four-star quarterback out of Symrna High School. He turned down offers from Oregon, LSU, Penn State, Michigan State and Tennessee to play for the Terps. His action in Maryland, though, was limited. In three seasons, Edge appeared in just four games. His most notable moment was stringing his first college touchdown pass in the 2023 Music City Bowl in Maryland's 31-13 win over Auburn. Following the 2024 season, in which he completed just five passes for 67 yards, Edge transferred to Eastern Michigan. Last year he rode the bench the entire season for the Eagles. No game time, no live reps.
Going into his senior season, Edge decided to transfer one more time and Morgan State came calling. The Bears went 4-8 last season and the quarterback position was a bit of a revolving door following its conclusion. Between Raymond Moore III, last year's MEAC Rookie of the Year, leaving for UTEP and Kobe Muassau exhausting his eligibility, MSU needed help at the QB spot. It was clear from the get-go that Edge would be their guy as he was the only quarterback transfer Morgan State brought in during the last cycle.
He's taken that chance and run with it. Edge's numbers are excellent six games into the season. He currently leads the MEAC in passing yards (1,337), passing yards per game (222.8) and touchdowns (11). His 68.3% completion rate is also sixth best in the entire FCS. Morgan State is ranked in the STATS Perform national media poll at #24 this week for the first time in program history. They have notable out-of-conference wins over Villanova (who made it all the way to the FCS semifinals last year) as well as Towson and Robert Morris. Their 5-1 start is the best they've seen since 2009.
The marriage between Edge and Morgan State has been a fruitful one for both sides so far and the expectations are, understandably, as high as they've been in quite sometime over in Baltimore. Edge is already one of just a few players named to the 2027 HBCU Legacy Bowl, an annual senior showcase for HBCU players hoping to get into the pros. The talks of a MEAC title and a Celebration Bowl are not as far-fetched as they once were. Conference play has not yet begun, but Edge and the Bears appear to be the new team to beat.
Morgan State travels to Nashville this weekend to take on Tennessee State at Nissan Stadium for the Tigers homecoming game. It's another game that they're favored to win and another opportunity for Edge to continue to show why both he and MSU made the right decision last offseason.
Kickoff is set for 6:30 PM (ET) on Saturday. The game can be streamed on ESPN+.
