On Thursday night, the New York Mets overcame a late-inning game-tying grand slam to defeat the Minnesota Twins 10-8. The Mets came through for right-handed relief pitcher Craig Kimbrel .
In the top of the eighth inning, Kimbrel loaded the bases with the Mets leading 7-3. Then, fellow right-handed reliever Huascar Brazoban came in and gave up the grand slam to Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers , the first of his MLB career.
In the bottom half of the inning, third baseman Bo Bichette notched a go-ahead double that brought in three runs to put the Mets up 10-7. Manager Carlos Mendoza called on closer Devin Williams to finish out the 9th inning. Then a bullpen mix-up ensued as Brazoban came out of the dugout and ran out to the mound, thinking he was going to continue. He was required to start the inning after crossing the foul line. Therefore, Williams wouldn't be eligible for a save.
After grounding out right fielder Austin Marin, Brazoban came out, and Williams came on in. Third baseman Tristan Gray hit an RBI single to bring Minnesota within two runs. Finally, Williams finished it off by striking out left fielder Trevor Larnach on a changeup and the count at 2-2.
The Mets are now in the midst of a two-game winning streak, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Their newfound spark comes days after suffering through a 12-game losing streak , the longest since 2002.
The Mets are 9-16, fourth in the National League East. They begin a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies on Friday.
